I doubt anyone here cares, but they finally uploaded a clip
Something about Dice's body when he was dancing right before he spins was weird, like it was rotoscoped without fixing and it also makes his head and face 3D-ish. I can't put my finger on it but its so weird
Also they really fucked up his eyebrows, his eyebrows do not really rise that far from his eyes and head.
Other than those two things, looks pretty good. Staying true to the source material is a fair trade for the loss of handdrawn animation (even though its been dead). I'll just wait for word of mouth when this thing actually comes out, I'm still wary of Netflix to get excited for this.

It reminds me of those Mickey Mouse shorts Disney made not too long ago. It’s an uncanny feeling when it tries to look somewhat hand-drawn but still obviously looks like computer CalArts shit.

I miss hand-drawn animation. I’ve been playing SFIII recently and it made me sad.

I get that its not feasible to have it hand drawn, but why doesn't it look like cartoons from the 30s? Like, that was what made cuphead so memorable.

Those fucking calarts smile all the fucking time, and I wondered if the game had those and I didn't notice, but no it had either closed mouth or smile with only visible tongue.
Yes. In fact, all of the cartoons of that era had the "calarts smile" for a lot of their characters.

Now that the show is out and I've watched most of it I can say it's... fine. I didn't really expect much, but it's ok for what it is. Even though making a true callback to the animation of the past is probably impossible due to studios being unwilling to give enough budget and standards & practices cucking any chance at the tone of the old Fleischer shorts returning, I still wish the show pushed a little harder in both regards. It has slightly sharper edges than most kid's Netflix stuff, but it is firmly a modern kid's show where I wish it was akin to a 30's kid's show. Probably an unfair expectation.

I can say my biggest disappointment is the lack of constant motion those cartoons had and especially the lack of weird off-model transformation type stuff which is weird because the game embraced that pretty heavily.

Might be a bit off-topic, but if I was going to try to emulate the tone, motion and atmosphere of a 30's cartoon this would be my gold standard to emulate:

By the looks and sounds of things, there must have been a lot of creative compromises regarding the source material and adapting it to a Netflix show. I personally don’t care for the small changes for the Devil’s design.

It was the first new cartoon I've watched in years that wasn't random clips or Samurai Jack s5, and I gotta say it was a lot more wholesome than I expected and was pretty authentic to the era, although it still had a few issues that bugged me, but not by much.
Animation quality is 50/50 for me. The flash animation is annoying but it can look really good when its good and really bad when its bad. The best scene that most caught my attention was the one where the Devil is tormenting King Dice, which feels like some classic Fleischer scene. I think I wouldn't mind the animation as much if the picture didn't look so clean when compared to the games which did a great job of getting the picture quality right and making it feel like an old film reel, although I do appreciate the dirty film filter they added a lot. But like @Professor G. Raff said, the lack of constant motion is what hurts it most, and its been shown that flash animation can achieve that to a degree. I know traditional or authentic looking animation is more expensive and time consuming but it would've been nice if the show at least looked like the intro more often or at least didn't have the characters be still so much.

The characterization is pretty hit and miss for me too. Cuphead and Mugman are really likeable, along with some of the villains, but the Devil, Porkrind and Miss Chalice just feel pretty underwhelming. Porkrind is portrayed as a complete douchebag with murderous tendencies instead of an ally or a standard greedy friend, something that meshes well with what we see in the games. Miss Chalice seems to be a straight up crook rather than someone looking out for the cups, I mean yeah they could change that in the next season, but from the set up its clear that she's just some ghostly crook looking out for herself who has even less in common with her game counterpart. The Devil is probably the most disappointing though since he seems to just be your standard recurring villain instead of reserving that role for King Dice while keeping the Devil as the behind the scenes bigger bad to maintain his sense of looming intimidation.

And I guess that characterization of the show's main villains is what brings me to my next point. The show would probably have been way better if they had kept the casino as the main plot point and recurring location, which would've allowed them to interact with the other game bosses more seamlessly and also giving the Devil and Dice a more proper reason to hound Cuphead and Mugman. But apparently they couldn't do that due to this moronic new age rating standard that prevents kid media from having casinos in it despite that Cuphead is probably the biggest anti-gambling ip in recent years. The lack of a casino also keeps them from adapting the plot of the game in a decent way so that's a bummer.
Overall, it was still a cute show and I'm sure kids and fans will love it, although it could've been better and the lack of constant motion or the casino is probably what hurts it most, but it was still more wholesome than I expected and I'm glad they avoided adding TVs or iphones to try and make it more modern. Guess we'll see how the next season handles the characters and story.

Also this is minor, but as an added bonus it was nice seeing some twitter spergs I know whine about how they couldn't find any bbq representation to latch onto.

Da fuck? Apparently it's okay to push borderline homoerotic shit onto kids shows but it's not okay to have casinos? Even if they're portrayed in a negative light?

We truly live in a Beppi the Clown World.

I watched all of it. It's okay. The show I think is kind of aiming at two audiences, they want actual kids watching it but they also want adult players of the game watching too, and it sometimes straddles that line well but sometimes it just falls decisively in the kids camp (like the baby episode). It can be surprisingly funny and occasionally remembers its roots and gives a fun cracked out animation (the ghost cemetery episode is particularly good).

I don't think it gains anything from having an overarching plot (with the Devil), I don't think kids would care and there's no reason adults should care about fucking Cuphead lore, I'd kind of prefer if it played more into being discount modern-day bargain brand Silly Symphonies/Fleischer stuff rather than trying to have a plot (lol).

Also, yes, it is not actually hand-drawn traditional art style, to me it looks and feels close enough to accept as being done in the style of even if not done with the same techniques.

Even if its meant more for kids , I still see the charm in it , and appreciate it , helps that the episodes are less than 15 mins each.
