There are studies showing that it doesn't actually prevent theft, just convinces customers that the neighborhood must be a crime ridden cesspool so they never shop there again.

I lived in a country with low crime for a few years. There are some convenience stores(no cigs or booze, mainly food) that are completely unstaffed. Door is completely unlocked and there are no security measures other than CCTV. People just walk in, bring their stuff to the self scanner, pay and leave. I did not live in a rich area, a coworker remarked that it was a "hard" town.
Really makes you think.
