Fun fact: People used to think dogs weren't smart enough to watch TV because they paid no attention to it whilst cats did. But that changed with the advent of higher refresh rate TVs. You see humans start to perceive it as motion by the time it reaches 55Hz which old TVs used to do. But dogs would just see it as a very rapid slideshow of still images. Now that you have 100Hz TVs, dogs are watching it.

This is a great example of how you have to be very careful with assumptions about the causes of what you observe. It was never that dogs weren't "smart" enough or had some other mental lack that cats and some other animals didn't. They could just see the TV's illusion for what it was.

Tax:

I don't have a large cute animal collection and such as I do it's mostly from here. So I had to dig deep into old folders for these. Hope you all like!

I had (well my family had) a German shepherd once who would actively watch TV and would love anything featuring dogs, staring in rapt attention. This was before current TVs. She utterly hated cats, though, and would completely flip out and start barking if any kind of cat, including big cats like lions and tigers, were on the screen. She would even flip out at CARTOON cats, which kind of shocked me as it takes a serious level of abstract thinking to recognize them as cats.

We had two cats at the time and she would bark and whine at the sight of them, although she knew she wasn't allowed to kill them. Literally years after they died, you couldn't even say their names, or the word "cat" around her, without a total freakout. And she even figured out the trick that if you spelled out a word, you were trying to hide something from her, and would flip out just as if you had actually said the word.

For my calm down time here's my pet rats. They are very young and have no idea about the lolcows of the world we live in.

there's a place near me where you can pet capybaras
I'm sure it's some manner of animal cruelty to make them interact with tourists but fuck the police imma go pet some capybaras
They're pretty notoriously chill and friendly to humans. Even wild ones will usually tolerate the presence of humans.
