Chris had low standards for birthday parties, Borb got away with being cheap

Surprised Chris has never been to Chuck E Cheese

Even if you've never been anywhere fancy, you could still see it on TV or in a movie, or read a passage in a book and get a general idea. I think it really boils down to his childlike mentality. Except for the birthday party thing to an extent. Barb 'n Bob just always gave him the laziest and cheapest birthday parties even as a kid. I know I had some really awesome parties growing up so this is probably why I'm so critical of his folks for his birthdays. Even if they couldn't afford really extravagant parties they could have taken the time to bake a cake, blow up a few balloons, throw up a few streamers, and taken him out to Applebee's instead of McDonald's or even the buffet.

In Borb's defense, I don't blame them for buying store baked cakes. Borb could have been crap bakers. Still, the only time Chris had something like a traditional party was when all his Gal-Pals came. I don't think he could handle Chuck E. Cheese due to his 'tism. It's loud and full of bright colours. Still, Chuck E. Cheese is the place where white-trash parents have fights over dumb shit. I'm sure Barb would have felt right at home.

I'm sure he has at least once. Chris is only a year older than me, and when I was a little kid Chuck E Cheese was huge in the early 90's. Pretty much every kid in my class had a party there. It's safe to assume he's been there at least once.

Wouldn't Chris have mentioned going there, though? I mean, he treasures completely arbitrary childhood moments, I'm pretty sure he would have said something about Chuck E. Cheese's.

"And uh, de uh Chuck E. Cheese, well he's Good and Well but I Do Not Think he can hold a candle to Sonic da Hedgehog or uh my first hero de American Rabbit."

Maybe when he was ages 6 through 10 he may have been there for another kids birthday party. (sounds odd that he'd be invited maybe, but we don't know much about him around this time in his life?) Around those ages, every kid in the class is usually invited to a birthday party.

Perhaps he felt some anxiety there and Borb took him home? It's a possibility.

It would need to be specifically asked or he'd have to be talking to someone about a topic closely related. Most of the personal stuff we know about his history was when Kacey, Jackie, or Ivy specifically asked about it. Although given the late age that his "mute button" got turned off and his untreated autism I can't really see him being invited to Chuck E. Cheese for birthday parties before the other kids were hitting that point where it didn't seem as cool to have a party there. Many of the pics we see of Chris doing kids stuff is around shops and malls so I kind of feel like Bob and Barb really half-assed the family outings. Why go to an expensive children theme restaurant when you can go to a store where people are paid to dress up and pose with you? Want to see an animatronic talking animal? Put on that two-sizes too small winter coat! We're going to the mall Christopher!

did Chuck E Cheese ever have any locations in Cville? their directory doesn't list any there but it lists a few Richmond

Back then, probably. Chuck E Cheese isn't nearly as big as it used to be. (I think?)

Chris doesn't go to Chuck E. Cheese, they don't have happy meals there.

It's easy to see the appeal of McDonald's over Chuck E. Cheese from Chris' perspective. I mean, Chuck E. Cheese makes kids earn their prizes by participating and saving up, whereas McDonald's hands them out to any kid who orders a Happy Meal. It's also easy to see how this philosophy carried out into the rest of Chris' life.

Does every Chandler birthday photo have to look depressing and cheap? The Chandlers could have gone to Applebee's or somewhere more fancy in Charlottesville. But BIRTHDAYS ARE EXPENSIVE. Seeing photos like this just makes me realize that Chandler's didn't care about one another at all. None of Chris's happier moments involve Borb taking him to the zoo as a kid or something fun most people would remember their parents doing for them.
I know right? That picture is like what you'd expect from a kid celebrating their birthday in class for a few minutes. Parents would bring in a cheap-o cake, everyone would sing, and if the teacher was feeling really generous they allowed the parent(s) to bring in soda instead of juice. And even then usually the birthday kid had a private celebration at home with a few friends. And Chris was turning 25! That's just extra sad.

And it's not just because Barb 'n Bob were old. You hear about grandparents older'n them doing a lot more stuff with their grandkids. They just didn't particularly care about doing shit with Chris. Just give him an assload of toys and hope he shuts up...or reads their names, whichever they wanted at the time.

Sometimes I wonder if part of Borb's shit-tastic birthday planning was a result of some type of age thing. Not because they were too old or in this scenario not really giving a shit, but because they just didn't feel birthday's were supposed to be necessarily special.

I know there was a place called the Discovery Zone that was sort of like Chuck E. Cheese. DZ was around from 1990 to 2000 so even though Chris would have been too autistic to really enjoy it, it could have been a potential dumping ground for him.

100% guarantee those red cups were not used for beer pong.

Also, what's in that green container? Are those baby wipes?

Yep....just in case of :briefs:. Also that picture make me feel a lot better about my 25th birthday too.

Discover Zone required more physical activity than Chuck E Cheese, and DZ died because many of their features became available at McDonalds for free

Or they just raised their child to be a child
This times a million.

Borb didn't seem to think Chris would progress beyond the mentality of a child, so they treat him like one, which causes him to continue to behave like a child, which in turn causes Borb to continue treating him like one....... you get the idea. Self fulfilling prophesy.
It's pretty much a textbook example of how not to raise a child with autism.

I reckon after the first half dozen or so birthdays, they were just going through the motions, it's not like Chris wanted to share these occasions with anybody else is it? he just wants his cake, Lego and vidya. By the time he hits his early teens, it's unusual, by his late teens, it's weird, and when he gets into his 20s it's just plain embarrassing.

I also think it's no coincidence that Chris never looks more retarded than in these photos of family scenarios orchestrated by Borb.

When I was younger I wanted my future house to BE a Discovery Zone.
I can't imagine a young Chris there - he'd probably get lost inside a ball pit or something. *yawn*
