I could envision a tradition in North Korea telling kids that Kim Il Sung brings them presents on winter solstice. (That is, an extra bowl of rice and some coal - to put in the oven to keep warm.)
Nope. The closest thing would be Kim Jong-il's mother's birthday on the 24th. Or maybe Kim Jong-Un's birthday on January 8th. Kim Jong-un would most likely demand cake.

I've heard my mom talk with parents of other kids in the special needs classes living in my hometown about some of the hardships that they've had to deal with, frequently at the hands of school officials and other kids who either have low expectations of them or aren't above trying to sabotage them just to validate their bigotry, but that's another story.

What would school officals have to gain from sabotaging a handicapped child? If you have to go out of your way to validate your bigotry, well you're a pretty lousy biggot.

I wouldn't say that's entirely true, I've heard my mom talk with parents of other kids in the special needs classes living in my hometown about some of the hardships that they've had to deal with, frequently at the hands of school officials and other kids who either have low expectations of them or aren't above trying to sabotage them just to validate their bigotry, but that's another story.
Well, my main reasoning came from when my mom called me into the room to watch some segment with her on one of those 20/20 type shows (this was several years ago by the way). It featured this girl who was seventeen or eighteen, but literally had the body of a baby. They talked about how wonderful she was in spite of the fact she was a permanent baby (maybe I'm just a horrible person but I don't think there's anything wonderful about a person who cannot literally grow up, that shit is depressing). At one point the parents said they never went took vacations or really did anything that would exclude the permanent baby and I could tell that her sisters didn't agree with their parents about that, but they would never admit it and I feel more sorry for them then I do the apparently deluded parents. But like I said, maybe I'm the horrible one.

It was service merchandise, a now closed catalog showroom. Seems like the chandlers went to the mall afterwards and posed for pics.
Thank you! It was really bothering me that I couldn't think of the name. I don't know how widespread they were, but we didn't have one in Rapid City so I only remembered it was some store we didn't have.

Yea Canada had a place like that ... well at least Ontario did called Consumers Distributing, but the 17 year old, permanent baby thing, I remember a news story on it, how there was something about her that she wasn't able to age at all like she quit growing at about 9 months or something.

Oh my. Being around babies is exhausting. Almost every minute of every day, they need SOMETHING, and figuring out what will drive you mad sometimes. The only thing that can keep you sane is knowing at some point, they will grow out of it. If that's not the case... wow, those parents really need to recruit professional help, if for no other reason than they need to prep for the day when they won't be around.

She's dead now, unfortunately. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brooke_Greenberg

I've seen stories like that before, it's awful for the family on the periphery, like the brothers and sisters. Most parents will love and be devoted to anything they get, but you can help but feel resentful if your parents have to care for what is basically a baby for 20 years.

On the opposite end, there is this case of an autistic man-child that was becoming such a problem that his family's church had to have a restraining order put on him:

I feel badly for the other four children in the family, they have to keep everything they own separate from their brother to keep it from getting destroyed. Hopefully they will benefit from the experience in their adult lives. I also feel for the rest of the church; I'm sure they aren't unsympathetic to the family's situation, but you can't have a 225 pound man having outbursts like that around children and elderly people.

Lucky for the Spartans, they never needed to deal with that..
This made me laugh like a retarded seal. If you look on the mutter museum website you can see the historical pics of some of the disorders

Crazy how blind they are to their son's behavior! The mother freely admits that he's destructive to her other kid's property and that when he tard rages they have to actually physically restrain him. But he's just a little saint when he's in church and how dare they make slanderous claims against him! Him, destroy property and attack people in church? They're just being mean to autistics! He only does that stuff at home!

Wtf on the part where he went in someone's car after church and started the engine. Fuck that, i would go to another church.

Trying to stay on topic, but all I can say is "ha, Chris was banned/suspended from his church too!"

Reminds me of a situation I heard about in Britain about seven or eight years ago. Basicly a heavily retarded girl of around five years or so was to be given anti-aging drugs to give her, in her parent's own words, "A better lease of life". The theory was, at least as I understand it, that by keeping her physically a child people would be less likely to look down their noses at her and pass her behaviour off as childishness. I dunno her name and I've never heard of any case like this since, so it dosn't seem like stunting 'tards' physical development to extend their childhood has become common practice.

Im not sure she is blind as much as frustrated and exhausted. Having a son like that stops families from having as much fun or convenience as other families.

The mother probably wants to go to chuch without having to worry about getting a baby sitter or having to sit in the "crying room" with her son. She likely gets defensive and angry when people (in her mind) attemt to deny her of what little comforts she has.

Besides, how is her son supposed to get to heaven, if he does not go to church and receieve communon? :)

This shit is nuts. It's like those people who keep 200 pound chimpanzees as pets and talk about how you can see the humanity in their expressions and stuff. But then they get cranky when the cops have to shoot the chimp when it rips someone's face off.

I'm reminded of this episode of Dr Phil that was about "awful mothers", and there was this one mother who had a severely autistic child like this. So the kid would scream, flip out, get violent, and they had to calm her down. Pretty much what's described in the article you linked. And sure, normal kids will scream and cry and be little shitheads. But at least normal kids grow up.

Dr Phil was completely browbeating this woman for being exhausted for having to take care of a violent 3 year old in a 14 year old's body. (Then, of course, paused every so often to hawk his book.)

:\Im guessng there is not much love for the mentally disabled commuity on this forum?

I don't think it's really a love or hate situation here - it's just more that the consensus is that although a person is mentally disabled, they should be encouraged to try and function to the best of their abilities in society and not be expected asspats because of said disabilities. At least that's the vibe I get. But yeah, despite all that, I agree sometimes the jokes can be a bit tasteless. :/

It's okay, we've all unloved, impatient, corrupted fools.
