So, I've noticed that several people have run play by post RPGs in the forums. I created this thread to serve as a meeting place to discuss them, offer suggestions and criticisms, and suggest and collaborate on scenarios and games to play.

I've wanted to get back into gaming for a while now, and now since i'm finally getting some free time, I'd love to play if anyone wants to run anything, or needs another PC.

I'm currently running one (which may have run out of steam), and I have several games planned out.
Let me just run one by you, Left 4 Autism. Basically, a lolcow themed zombie apocalypse. Survive roving packs of mutant autists, save survivors, and uncover the truth behind the autism apocalypse. And yes, some of our favorite lowcows will appear as bosses.

(lol) I'm in. I gotta find a huge bag of d6's if we're playing GURPS though.
There's an online site for dice rolls that works fairly well, I'll link to it.

Now, let me set the scene.
Some time in the not too distant future: the cries echo up from the street. "Normalfag!". The swarm descends on a survivor and pulls him down. You watch from the roof of the building you're currently holed up in. The mass of autists around the survivor suddenly dissipates, and his injured form is left in the street. He shudders, gets up, and looks around. "Hey, who wants to rea my sonic fan fic?". He's one of them now.
Richmond has been like this for two weeks, maybe more. The autist plague came out of nowhere, turning perfectly normal people into the shambling, greasy haired creatures that now swarm the streets. A few safe zones have been established, one of which you're currently trying to get to. You don't know if you'll make it.

Thirteen hundred hours. Magazine check everyone.

I gaze out through my binos from the rooftop at the chaos on the streets. No biggie. My team has this. The five of us swarm down the stairs in perfect formation. The frontman on point smashes the Autistics lurking in the corners with 12 gauge buckshot. CQC motherfuckers. We surge down onto the street on a tight group. Corner check as we hit the bottom floor. Moving as a group, we close on the target building. I see a cluster of Autistic zombies in the way. I rip a frag grenade loose from my body armor and ready my chainsword...

BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!

It begins.

Okay, this game will be awesome. Hopefully.

Alright, so I kind I have a problem. I'm not sure what game system to run this on. I have a basic set of GURPS rules, but GURPS looks really complex. Does anyone know any other systems, I'm really new at this.

GURPS is a great system but it leans towards the crunchy side. Why not take a look into Savage Worlds.

Bad news: GURPS can be insanely complex. Also, it requires you to have umpteen-hundred D6 handy. GURPS Vehicles takes the cake on this. Trust me. Five hours to roll up a standard battle-wagon? YEP. Google it.

Good news: They have a source book for almost anything. Any genre, any setting, any time period, any historical or fantasy setting, anywhere. This also includes peripherals like equipment, NPCs, "Magic", and weaponry.

I've got playing experience (no pun intended) in Chainmail, 1st, 2nd & 3rd edition Dungeons & Dragons; D&D expansions like Dark Sun, Forgotten Realms, Spelljammer, the old strategy game "Year of the Rat", Call of Cthulhu, The old Games Workshop Elric of Melniboné RPG, the "Pathfinder" basic D20 system, and a little of Munchkin & Wahrhammer 40K.

(also, Happy Birthday, Surtur!)

Ok, Savage Worlds looks interesting. Is there like a free light rule sheet or something so that we can get the basics of it?

I will look around a bit, but you can buy the digest edition of the core book for 8 bucks.
OK, thanks.
The one thing I don't get about GURPS is how skills are supposed to work. If only I knew how to do that, I could kludge together a simple version to use.
The thing about how I want to play this as a GM is I hate math. I really hate math. And I also hate autistic rules that demand that you follow them precisely. So, here's how I'm going to make this work. Focus on creativity instead of boring skill checks. Let's say you're in an alleyway with a locked door. You need to open the door. There's a bunch of alley crap in the alley (garbage cans, large boards, stuff like that). Now, you could do a strength check to kick open the door or pick the lock or whatever. Or, you could just use the large boards as an improvised battering ram, which is an automatic success. If you can improvise something creative (but still somewhat believable, no turning balsa wood and pantyhose into a helicopter), it's an automatic success.

Well, there are different systems for different play styles. Savage Worlds prides itself on its streamline rule set so it follows the motto of "Fast. Furious. Fun!" I like rules lite games, one of the reasons I love the new rules for D&D is that they leave a lot of room open for interpretation my the GM. To me this is ideal, I want to keep the flow going and stopping to make a bunch of checks and pouring over the rule books just to do a few things is arduous and the one thing I hate about 4e is that it played to a style of play in which players relied too much on the rules and less on having fun. In the 1st Edition AD&D handbooks, Gary Gygax himself mentions that while there are rules to the game, the most important part of the game is having fun. Rules should not get in the way of having fun and telling a story, so despite the constant shrieks from 4e fanboys about "Mother May I gaming!" it is acceptable for you as the GM to make calls about success no matter what rules you are using. The big thing is to have fun, because if you are not having fun then why are you playing?

I agree completely. If it isn't fun, what's the point? D&D 3ed. left kind of a bad taste in my mouth, but in hindsight, I realize it was mostly due to the gaming crowd I was hanging out with at the time. They were really a bunch of mini-max Munchkins. Which segues to my next point. Surtur, I was an ass both to you & in general in that last gaming thread you posted, I apologize. I was way out of line. My information was both dated & colored by my own personal bad experiences.

I don't know if I like the automatic success for imagination but I do like rewarding imagination and intuitive. I think a good GM should encourage this kind of thinking rather than the rules say you can't do this smart and awesome thing. I'm down for any game you run.

Well, I just spend 5 hours making a list of GURPS based weapons and abilities, so right now I'm leaning towards just using a slightly modified version of it. Of course, my style of GM is less "spend hours hunting through the rule book" and more "eh, it's close enough", so hopefully this won't be too crazy. You know, for a game where you fight zombie Bronies, kill people with wedgies, and obtain your own medallion of fail. That let's you turn into Sonichu.

As for the modifications I made, it's just stuff like using a combat system like the one in Pathfinder and adding a basic leveling up system. I'll make it up as we go along if more modifications are needed or certain rules are unnecessary or over complicated.

EDIT: Okay, never mind, Savage Worlds looks a lot more interesting than GURPS.
