Cyberpunk 2077 Grieving Thread

Apparently it has not even sold 1 million copies so far this year. The absolute state. Word of mouth and the Sony delist put this game six feet under immediately.

It didn't even hit 1 million worldwide?

Something funky is going on. I thought they'd claimed it was already a success on pre orders alone? Were the returns really *that* huge?

Or was it all lies? You'd think on the hype alone they could have hit 1 million.

Crazy Theory Time

Despite all of our talk about overhype and shit, what if the only people that *truly* gave a shit were Game Journos and CDPR Fanboys? Now that I think about it, none of the normies I know really gave a shit about Cyberpunk...

Hell, now that I think about it, nobody I knew gave a shit about Witcher 3 until it turned out to be super fucking good. Myself included.

Was everything about this game completely made up and manufactured? Including the hype?

It sold 12 million copies last year not counting roughly 3-4 million refunds. The <1 million sales figures is from this year. Negative word of mouth has absolutely destroyed this game and deservedly so. If I were the delusional fanboys on reddit I wouldn't count on DLC coming because there is literally no audience for it.

Where this gets interesting is CDPR's next game. People fell for their lies on Cyberpunk but if these sales figures are true they are not going to fall for it again. And given that all indications are their next title is a Ciri Witcher game but written by the same people who wrote Mass Effect Andromeda things are not looking good for CDPR.

They already made their money back from the preorders. Last I checked only ~200K people had the standards to get refunds.

The industry is fucked, but that writing has been on the wall for years already.

idk man, < only > selling under a million copies for week 3+ sales alone isn't that bad. The game still had some great inertia.

But yeah, I was gonna say that under a million total was ridiculous when the all-time peak on steam alone was 1.05mil.

I know I'm being horribly optimistic, but I really do hope this puts a stake in the heart of current development philosophy, which seems to be 'just ship it in a half-ready state and patch after launch'.
That ship has long since sailed, friend. With disk space and bandwidth so absurdly cheap and ubiquitous now, that genie's never going back in the bottle. There's simply no longer any real pressure to ship a complete and polished product at "release" anymore. It's not like making a NES or SNES game that gets baked into a million read-only cartridges that can never be patched -- only replaced -- if a fix becomes necessary.

Under 1 million copies on all platforms or just ps4? Does this number include GOG.com sales? I ask because until basically last week Cyberpunk 2077 was in either the 1 or 2 slot on GOG's best seller list.

I checked Nexus and no one is even bothering to make slutty clothes/nude mods for Cyberpunk2077. You know your dead gay game is dead when not even the nude modders want it.
Slutty clothes mod posted a few days after you made this post.
First nude mod for the game, originally posted on December 14th 2020.
Partial nude mod first posted on February 2nd 2021.
A slutty clothing mod for NPCs, originally posted on February 2nd 2021.

Granted, this isn't skyrim levels of nude mods, but people are making them and they do exist.

from reddit

  • The next patch ("not the biggest one, rather smaller") will be out in the next couple of weeks.
  • They're in "the middle" of getting back onto Playstation Store, there are "metrics" they need to hit before they'll be allowed back that they don't want to discuss. No estimates on their return.
  • They've also had discussions with Microsoft, not just Sony, with some fairly bad implications (ie. the SVP of biz dev saying that he'll only talk about the contents of the discussions with Sony and MS in his memoirs in 20 years time)
  • Their weird "roadmap" was updated with a footnote that the "Free DLCs" will be "small additional content".
  • 300 people working on unfucking the game, with 30% of the team working on unannounced new content. US$7.9 million has been spent on current patches.
they totally tought that they could bioware sand magic this shit and tanked the entire company

Seems to be all platforms, I saw a bunch of people saying it yesterday but can't find the direct source ATM. So I guess take it with a grain of salt for now. Apparently it might be from a different report.

There's fucking up, and there's fucking up, and somehow CDPR did both of those.

Yeah, I think I will be taking that grain or two of salt, the game was pretty high on the steam best seller list around the 10th or 15th spot, in March, too. I think sales probably dropped off, but I don't think they dropped off that much.

The only way we are getting a fixed Cyberpunk game is through a fan project. Where someone just makes their own version of Cyberpunk 2077, and it may not have the same production value but there is something to be said about doing more with less and being forced to keep your focus.
Personally I would prefer a Cyberpunk 2020 or even a prequel. Michael Pondsmith's world has potential even if CP2077 didn't live up to its expectations. I enjoyed the game personally and experienced few bugs but your mileage may vary.

It's biggest problem isn't so much the gameplay, graphics, or even bugs, I'd say it's more guilty of trying to be several things at once instead of excelling at one or two things that would have put it at the top.

He already said on Twitter although he regrets the tone of his Cyberpunk review he stands by it and will not be removing it.
Ah, of course.

When did he become such a corporate shill? Has he always been?

He's given Bethesda quite a pounding. He shat all over Fallout 76 and called Wolfenstein Youngblood "an absolute disgrace and the worst game I've ever played" He also called Anthem a scam but he's also sucked a lot of corporate cock so I have no idea.

At the same time he was one of the few to say TLOU2 was below average when everyone else gave it 10/10's so who knows for sure.

That only means not all of them sponsor him.
