Day 10: Muscle Study
20220208_muscles.jpg

This was supposed to be an anatomy study, but I was listening to a long lecture while drawing and ended up just copying the reference and learning nothing.

I have some questions for the real artists here.

1. What coloured canvas do you like to use? I've heard that neutral grey is better so that you don't develop a biased value range, but I see plenty of people just start and draw/paint straight onto a white canvas.

2. Blue/Red or Grey/Black for sketching? I know that animators in the past liked to use blue/red kind of hue since it was easy to do notations since they don't show up on photocopying machines, and it is easy to do your proper line-work on top of a sketch with a different colour.

Thanks.

Once I heard about an hyper realistic painter who would not only paint under the same light conditions everyday (as you should do, if you paint), but would also use always the same clothes because, you see, when light bounces off materials it "carries" (so to speak) a bit of colour, and different materials/colours of clothing would produce different tinting effects in the surface of the painting. My point is, I think that's a bit too much and you shouldn't worry about it.

In any case, if you're planning on working with a 50% grey canvas, make sure to use some lighter values to produce light, otherwise you're effectively cutting contras by 50%.

Day 11: Sketch and Value study Christian Bale in American Psycho.
I'm not confident with my shape design at all, really gotta work on that, maybe I should turn off opacity on my brush to prevent me from randomly blending when I am unsure about the values. I hear that's a common beginner mistake which results in muddy paintings.

Day 12: Back Muscle Anatomy
Some of the muscles are hard for me to recognize, hopefully I've labelled them accurately. It seems like some anatomy charts online are missing stuff, or refer to different layers, which may or may not be visible on the surface, so I had to consult multiple diagrams. Still unsure if it's right. Will need to study more.
