I mean it in all due respect, I'm broke so I can't get me some good headphones as of right now.
I’ve been broke for years, but this guy is part of what got me into the AirPods Pro’s. The other part was that I was able to borrow them from a friend I was staying with at a convention. I bought a set right then and there, as I had a *little* bit saved since I hadn’t gone to a fur con in like half a decade.
One of the best audio purchases I’ve ever made. It’s gonna be a slightly lean ol’ Christmas this year, but I really wanna try the KS2s that he raves about. Under $30 and they apparently have no reason to sound as good as they do for the outlay. You can even get balanced cables for them! I’d be happy to report back if you/anyone else is interested in what I think, either for the AirPods or KS2s.
I’d like to get some of the Grados he’s mentioned, too. They are positively not a set of cans you leave the house with, as they are wide open so they’ll bleed out and in. But supposedly they’re also really, really nice, and have a unique benefit of being headphones you can eat with. That’d be sick for movies etc. I also don’t believe they’re a huge hassle to run, but I have a headphone amp anyway. But do keep this in mind once you do get bitten by the audiophile bug. Some headphones *require* an amp, some will sound merely ‘average’, and others will run just fine out of a MacBook etc (which actually have relatively stout DACs in them. You can run a good proportion of decent cans out of one of these.) So be cognisant of that.
But yeah, while earbuds aren’t for everyone (and I get that), the KS2s are apparently a no-brainer, and I will be ordering some at some point in the near-ish future.
The grados will come later, but I eventually want to make my old Fiio E17k amp work for its keep for once. Speaking of, I bought that to take the place of a dead integrated sound card in my old PC. The single best audio decision I’ve ever made. I’m so happy I made that decision, instead of just getting a sound blaster or something. I can use this amp *anywhere* and it will drive proper high end headphones. Although these days, I’d probably recommend the BTR5, if only for the fact that it’s got Bluetooth, so you can use any cans you want, wirelessly. I’d have killed for that shit 10 years ago, and so would you.
