I think that mentality is only really held by crooks who were found innocent. People generally don't really view people like OJ, Bill Cosby or Casey Anthony in a positive light despite them all being "legally innocent".

He wasn't adjudicated innocent, though. He settled and paid a 6-figure fine. Note that he didn't say "I was not guilty" because he was guilty. He didn't say "I was not found guilty" because he was found guilty (by stipulation). He only said "they didn't present evidence against me." Well no shit Dave, that's because you caved before they could go after you.

Dave is a fucking retard. Take Debian for instance, which is only one of the oldest and most prolific Linux distros of all time that's here to stay for the foreseeable future. Debian is infamous for not including anything that would be considered "nonfree" in the base install, which even encompasses shit most people want no matter what, like WLAN drivers. And it certainly doesn't require you to compile your own kernel, which you could still do if you wanted to. If you're a gigantic free software autist, you owe it to yourself to trim down your system to the bare minimum necessities (so you can, you know, audit their code) and you presumably have the requisite knowledge.

Now I guess Dave could pull a big gotcha on me and point out that after 30 years of existence, the brand spanking new 2023 Debian 12 has now made proprietary firmware opt-out during install rather than forcing you to even download it yourself. So not too hard to believe he exploited people selling them software they don't actually need. Also didn't enjoy his smugness over copy protection. Copy protection doesn't fuck over pirates, it fucks over legitimate customers that bought the product and now can't activate it for arbitrary reasons or home servers shutting down. A pirate will simply crack the software to never need to phone home or be provided a key for activation. While a customer will pound sand if they can't connect to an activation server any more.
