Yes, he was a fundie incel a bad day short of pulling an Elliot Rodger if he kept not getting pussy, but his strips had something resembling actual comedy.

It's Walky! seemed like he was developing some storytelling skills, but, ultimately, it never amounted to anything.

All in all, the Golden Age of Webcomics was fairly underwhelming, wasn't it.

That's why I like fiction that's non-preachy, it leaves room for interpretation and doesn't demand that the reader have the same opinions as the author.

I do realize that most of Willis' comics output does not fall under 'non-preachy'.

But he's still so bad at conveying his point properly that it can still be up for interpretation. Like the fact that every non-white character except for Walky, who is based on Willis, committed a crime at some point in the comic, while most of the white kids are pure and innocent. The biggest raging assholes are all under the LGBT umbrella, and the only character who died was a bisexual male. Mary is meant to be this hate-filled monster but she brings up a lot of good points and only retaliates, she never attacks first.

If it wasn't for the fact that Willis is pretty blatant about his views in his social media, I can see where the idea that he's secretly based comes from.

The guy comes from an evangelical family. Definitely not as extreme or radical as he would like you to believe but neither your run of the mill conservative family.

Willis himself was a naive, sheltered, homeschooled christian boy all the way through his university years, much like Joyce was.

His oeuvre is fascinating in the dissonance between what Willis want to tell you and what he tells you:

You can read, she was a naive, arrested-development, bubbly, nice, cheerful, friend to all living things who was collectively peer pressured into abandoning christianity, lost her faith through implausibly stupid circumstances, and is now a bitter, materialistic, selfish, snarky cunt such as the rest of the cast. You can only see traces of her former self whenever she needs to 'improve' at something.

Joyce's Mom:

Willis says, she's a monstruously abusive christian fundamentalist that would make Carrie's mom ideal and Barb Chandler to win again the mother of the year award.

You can read, she's a grounded christian with conservative values, snarky but in a bad way (she snarks at the wrong trees), patient to a fault with all the nonsense around, and trying her best to be nice despite how utterly contemptible every character her daughter invites into her life is.


Becky:

Willis says, the friend everyone would like to have!

You can read, BPD bitch who is a danger to others and herself.


Walky's mom:

Willis says, a monstrous racist and abusive mother.

You can read, a beaten down mother who, despite her efforts, has to put up with the lazy, spineless nigger she married and their cursed offspring, a criminal psychopathic bitch and a guy so irresponsible he's almost retarded.


I could go like that with pretty much every fucking character, for real.

The best/worst parts of Joyce and Walky's mothers was how very different they were back in the It's Walky! days. Mrs. Walkerton may have done some shady things (mostly having Sal and Beef switched at birth, then abandoning Beef when the truth came out), but that was all supposed to be for the greater good. Joyce's mom? Her big scene involved demanding Joyce and Walky make her some grandbabies, like, right away.

I stopped paying attention when Shortpacked! ended (and haven't read the entire thread), so while I knew he had gone full woke, I had no idea things were that grim down Willis way.

It's a shame, too, because he was one of the better Keenspot cartoonists back in the day. Art wasn't perfect, but it was consistent and continually improved, and he was better than most at storytelling four panels at a time. And Mike was comedy gold almost every time he opened his mouth.

And yes, he's admitted Joyce is autobiographical, which is why she tried to convert a gay dude, because Willis dated a lesbian so he wouldn't be tempted by pre-marital sex.
