Wow imagine how shitty it was that they decided to axe it instead of releasing it considering they green lit shit like birds of prey, and WW84.
I wonder how many other projects will be getting the axe now
Yeah. Most movies at least get dumped straight to streaming nowadays instead of shelved. So, it must be really bad. Then again, some producer called Chaos Walking "unwatchable" when it was sheleved for a couple years. And then when that came out and I was all hyped to watch a truly shitty movie with some friends... It turned out to just be really boring.

I see comparisons to Plan 9, but this could be more like The Day The Clown Cried of superhero movies, something supposedly so bad that it absolutely boggles the mind how bad it must be that they don't even want the public getting a glimpse, which also happens to have whet a lot of peoples' curiosity for this movie.

It may just be garden variety bad or it might be major car wreck of a film beyond your wildest speculations. Oh, the mystery.

Meanwhile to quote Harry Shearer from an interview in Spy Magazine back in '92, one of the few people ever allowed a look at a rough cut of The Day The Clown Cried

"With most of these kinds of things, you find that the anticipation, or the concept, is better than the thing itself. But seeing this film was really awe-inspiring, in that you are rarely in the presence of a perfect object. This was a perfect object. This movie is so drastically wrong, its pathos and its comedy are so wildly misplaced, that you could not, in your fantasy of what it might be like, improve on what it really is. 'Oh My God!'—that's all you can say."

I mean, Tomb Raider 2018 replaced The Flash in the release window schedule and that film is absolute boring and unwatchable trash, yet for some ungodly reason, still made enough money in China to deserve a sequel set to be made for release for March 2021, yet said sequel was shelved by MGM themselves, and not because of COVID or anything, but because they took too long to actually greelit the project, they hired new directors and writers, MGM's new management, etc.

Although I wouldn't be surprised if they end up quietly dumping it on streaming platforms like Amazon (which owns MGM) or Netflix, or just straight up cancel it what with Embracer currently purchasing Eidos and Crystal's IPs from Squeenix.

What are the chances that the movie is just really boring, and this whole shtick is an attempt to get audience interest for when they discretly release it on HBOMax? That or they are hoping a #ReleaseBatGirlFilm similar to the SnyderCut movement?

Oh, it's probably just boring. I don't think it'll be a great trainwreck. It'd be dope if someone leaked an assembly cut of it with unfinished VFX though. Like when X-Men Origins Wolverine got leaked all those years back.

That workprint was cool, was interesting to see that step in the movie making process

Apparently the Discovery guy, David Zaslav, who is now running the ship over there has just pushed the flush lever on a ton of the WB's utterly worthless fan fiction-tier DC content. There are still rumors that Amber Heard is being reshot out of the Aquaman sequel (which is also rumored to be a mess with or without her) and the Flash movie, although finished, keeps getting it's release date pushed back as everyone tries to figure out how many minors Ezra Miller has been inappropriate with. And I mean everyone, including the police.

Nerds are weeping about it, but there is a good argument behind the idea it's worse to release some 'irredeemable' franchise-destroying piece of trash even if it means having to eat the cost. Whatever money you could pull out of such a project in releasing it even to streaming won't be worth the damage to the brand even in the immediate short term.

When you look at who is writing and helming this sort of trash, it's all either nobodies or people with extremely bad track records who have nonetheless been allowed to work again and again. All of these ruinous productions have all been unforced errors, the legacy of incompetent studio managers and development people that have been allowed to run things for years.

Weirdly, amazingly, studios have been treating their top franchises like low circulation comic books from the Big Two: just hand them to anyone and allow SJWs to alienate most of the audience with their retarded ideas. But, unlike comic books, these franchises cost hundreds of millions of dollars to put together, so insane creatives are really playing as The Joker and setting hills of cash on fire. The Flash movie has cost at least $200M and the extremely "problematic" Ezra Miller cannot be removed from it; he plays three versions of the Flash, so it's still possible the order will be made to axe it rather than release it. You will then hear the ear-splitting shrieks of nerds crying about the lost footage of Michael Keaton wheezing out "I'm Batman" again.

No sane person can complain about any of the miserably bad content that Warner has been producing is getting the chop, but lots of Hollywood creatives who have been indulged over the past several years are screaming about it because their jobs are at stake if they actually have to create movies and shows that people would enjoy watching. Given this is the age of unrelenting superhero content, the mishandling of the DC franchise is far worse than even Star Wars, leaving billions of dollars on the table as Warner tries to make dumb characters like "Liberated Female Anti-hero Harley Quinn" happen. Apparently the end goal of the Flash movie was to have a new DC Cinematic Sub-Universe led by three chicks: Supergirl, Batgirl, and Wonder Woman. At least Gal Gadot knows how to smile and look decent, the other two are a spicy Latinx with a choppy haircut and a black woman with a ridiculous wig.

The whole PR problem, by the way, of having bisexual predator Ezra Miller in a $200M superhero movie probably goes all the way back to Warner's interference in DC properties after Man of Steel, when after numerous nerds and whiny critics complained they decided to try to force their own version of an Avengers movie several movies too soon and "lighten the tone" by introducing more "comedic" characters--hence Ezra Miller as a "nerdy Millennial" Flash.
Honestly reading this over, it really puts into perspective that DC is handled worse than Star Wars.

Hell there's one big thing about DC that's proof of it which is that there wasn't even the vague idea of a plan to begin with. Warner Bros made green lantern based on how they thought people loved the jet scene in Iron Man, suddenly planned a cinematic universe and thrusted it on Zack Snyder who didn't plan on doing one with Man of Steel, and then pretty much everything else since then.

In comparison to Star Wars, while the specific stories weren't planned out, there at least was the vague idea of a trilogy to begin with whereas DC just wanted to speedrun to catch up to Marvel.

This new stuff recently with the canning of projects makes me even less confident especially when they still are desperately chasing for a cinematic universe in the same vein as Marvel when it's really clear at this point that many people are feeling fatigue from these types of Marvel-style superhero movies. That's why there was more gravitation towards Joker, Peacemaker, and The Batman since those three were actual shows and movies that didn't try to desperately chase after the windmill that was the same hype Marvel earned from Iron Man to Endgame.

I never watched BvS but I question them bringing in Doomsday so early. Doomsday is the type of thing that would appear in a Third Superman movie and be a massive deal. They could have had Metallo instead

Following Batgirl cancelation, Supergirl movie is also canceled https://comicbook.com/dc/news/supergirl-the-flash-spinoff-movie-not-moving-forward/

You can say... it's a cancel culture 😎
My faith in God has been restored

Again as many people have already said both here and other places. The whole DCEU has been rushed. They never thought about storywise and more about "how to compete with the MCU" Than anything.

It's a real shame as I would have loved to see a DCEU Mongul. Perhaps Justice League could have been a spin on the Invasion! arc and Man of Steel 2 would be about Superman in exile fighting Mongul.

They wanted to rush Death of Superman early so they can resurrect him for Justice League. It's extremely stupid and unearned, but it fits since the rest of the movie is stupid and unearned.

They also showed him and Wonder Woman in the trailers, which was so dumb. Did people all of a sudden forget about the element of surprise?

So Watchmen, wanted to read it as I've watched the movie but never read the comic. It's not bad. The vast story beats with Moore using it as a deconstruction, the Minutemen of the 40s are seen as a golden age with it's post war optimism and then giving way to the 50s and 60s and the cold harsh reality of the cold war. Good stuff. The art is really good as well, several scenes that are still splash pages convey the weight of the scene, like Rorschach entering the comedian's apartment after his death.

Another thing I liked was the use of perspective in some scenes. There's one where Rorschach walks in the background thinking aloud while Nite Owl guess Veidt's password on his computer, the entire scene is from behind the computer. The kind of visual directing that I'm more used to seeing in movies rather than comics.

The not so good though, while the characters as character-types are good, the actions they go through are typically bad. For instance, Laurie is basically useless through out the entire story, she gets with Jon at 16, stays with him till 38, then hooks up with Dan, has 3 sex scenes with him and her only other major scenes are arguing with Manhattan on Mars. Dan as Nite Owl is just kind of in the story and Ozymandias, being the anti-hero is only revealed in the last two chapters where he gets most of the screen time. Dr Manhattan is hard to care for, not because of blue dick but because he's apathetic to everything happening around him.

The characters that actually drive the story are Rorschach and the Comedian. I really did like how Comedian was never alive in the present tense in the story, you only find out about him in flashbacks and what kind of a bastard he was. Rorschach meanwhile drives the story, his opening narration, getting locked up in prison, he's the only one who cares when Veidt reveals his plan. He's also the only one with a bit of an arc, as when he was little he praised Truman for dropping the Bombs but since now he sees the world in black and white, he'd go against Veidt who is essentially doing the same thing to unite the world.

Indeed the general apathy displayed by the cast, Manhattan does not care for humans, Laurie can't see the bigger picture (even using personal experiences in her conversation with Jon) and Dan talking with Hollis and being a recluse. Ozymandias wanted to save Humanity from itself at any cost. Comedian saw the world as one big joke and laughed along with it, Rorschach saw the world in black and white, a problem to be solved and a criminal to lock up. Is it any wonder why people like Rorschach when he's the only one out of this miserable lot to actually care about the world he lives in? Even if it means being the psychotic vigilante that Alan Moore despises.

Overall opinion: Hrm. Art good. Story beats good. Characters unique. Conversations and actions contrived.
Can see why classic, if flawed.

I dug the sequel crossover with DC comics they had. It has some stupid shit with trump for a panel or two but it was actually much better constructed and plotted out then I expected.
