Nevermind a film about fucking Oppenheimer. Who would have honestly thought a film like that would get a billion dollars, compared to something like Inglourious Bastards?

I know it’s Nolan, and his name alone puts asses in seats, but still. He’s extremely lucky.

Nevermind that since Aquaman 2 supposedly mean nothing in the grand scheme of DC, less people might be motivates to see it. And let’s not forget about Amber Heard meeting the same fate as Ezra Miller.

Weird how an R-rated movie can still sell gangbusters in current year as it a rarity these days, with some exceptions such as Deadpool or Joker, and especially a biopic, even selling more than both musical biopics Straight Outta Compton or Bohemian Rhapsody
 
Anyone heard any of the podcasts DC has done? I know they did a couple of Batman ones (Unburied and The Audio Adventures) but no clue as to the quality of them.

Oppenheimer is the first movie that will actually get me to watch the Oscars and root for it for about as long as I can remember. The only other competition that I can even think comes close in 2023 is Godzilla or maybe The Holdovers, and comedies/kaiju are forbidden by law to win anything if Woody Allen isn't involved. If Cillian doesn't at least win actor then it's screwed beyond belief.

I had to look up the list of best pictures winners, and I really don't like I liked any of them that much since No Country for Old Men. Jeez.

I personally do like The King's Speech and Birdman, and even nominations such as 127 Hours and Whiplash. I just don't really care for the Oscars or any award show for that matter as they are completely rigged slop. So don't be surprised if none of them end up winning the categories that should've won. Keep in mind, Forrest Gump won Best Picture and other awards, but 1994, being a great year for cinema, had The Shawshank Redemption and Quiz Show, and those two should've won Best Picture

I'm fully prepared for it to be a C tier solid hit better than 90% of the MCU post Whedonvengers and it to still tank. I've long felt that the Warners doesn't pad that numbers like Disney and it leads to the perception that they're somehow lesser.

I watched the Flash online.

Here's what I saw. Geoff Johns basically took over the mess that was SnyderDC. He insisted that his comics, a large number of which aren't great or are even terrible, become the basis of all DC going forward. He sabotaged Snyder and meddled with Matt Reeves Batman.

So you have the bipolar mess that is Aquaman, Wondy, the Flash. They took Flashpoint, a bleh little Johns story about Barry Allen being a monster and destroying reality and they removed the only bits that make it work. Batman is supposed to be THOMAS WAYNE. The impetus of that character is there's a world where his son is alive. It's an actual story, unlike Keaton cameo porn. It wasn't bad seeing Keaton, but he was forced into a movie where he didn't really have anything to do all so you could nostalgia porn. Same with Supergirl. The Superman in Flashpoint was an alien who was abused, but who had Lois Lane as his only friend and so he also had this attachment to humanity. He represents this withered and warped creature that still finds a way to be good.

I don't think Ezra Miller killed the Flash (he didn't help), a decade of greed and incompetence did that. The flash is a hollow story about a manchild destroying reality without the pieces being tied together or the movie ever obtaining cohesion. It was a HORRIBLE first flash movie that you don't get if you aren't forcing yourself to adapt every Geoff Johns version of characters.

Pill me as somebody who adored the first one.

Part of me just wants to see godzilla and not give DC money, but the other half wants a good time with family.

It will very definitely a good time with family. It's a little silly at parts but a solid adventure none the less.
 
Having watched Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom today, I can say that was thoroughly entertained much like with the previous one. The added worldbuilding to Atlantis, the new character arc for Arthur, the sibling relationship he establishes with Orm, and Black Manta being an irredeemable villain were the main highlights. I loved the pulp sci-fi suits that Manta's minions wore and the armament they got from the Lost Kingdom. The humor wasn't too annoying or got in the way of serious moments. While I didn't find the runtime to be a drag, I did find the constant use of stock footage from the last movie to be excessive. My expectations were subverted with neither Arthur's dad nor son being killed off and I was fine with it.

Still watching The Batman and it's kinda weird in that Batman himself feels almost like a halfway point between Batman The Animated Series' version and The Brave and The Bold's version of the character. Like Batman from TAS he tends towards being more serious, but not outright brooding and borderline depressed like TAS. Rather he's still lighthearted enough to love nachos and make bad puns at his villain's expense like TBATB's version would.

I also have mixed feelings about their version of Harley. For one thing, I do prefer the "Arkham doctor manipulated and headfucked by the Joker into being his lackey" thing a bit better than "incompetent TV shrink" but I absolutely LOVED seeing a less abusive relationship between her and the Joker. The Batman's version of the Joker is actually NICE to his version of Harley. He liked her so much he was the one who actively sought her out to get her to join him. It was actually fucking WHOLESOME!

Aquaman 2 had a fuck ton of things going against it, most of which would have been avoided if they stuck to one of the earlier dates.

1. The Heard lawsuit from 2022, would be one thing but Aquaman was named dropped a lot during it. But having heads of the studio common about her lack of on screen chemistry really is something you don't want out in the public.
2. The number of delays the movie has had, was meant to be late 2022, then March 2023 to the final date it ended up getting. By the time it came out people's hype had already gone.
3. Poor slate of superhero movies this year from both DC and Marvel has caused some level of comic book burn out or least wait and see from audiences.
4. People know the DCU is getting rebooted but in the months leading up to the movie it has been know that Jason Momoa will likely be moving to Lobo after this. So lack of fan investment. This wouldn't have been a issue if they hit that 2022 date.
5. Quality of the movie it's self. Movie got a B cinema score, a low cinema score is always a sign it will have poor word of mouth and not much in legs. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is the only one that got that grade which has ever done well, with over $800 million world wide, else the next highest was around $330 million.
6. WB had two other movies out this month Wonka and Color Purple. Will have been some level of competition between the three movies, however, the most impact will have been from WB having split marketing between the three.
7. Blue Beetle which also flopped ended up doing very well when it came on HBO Max, so is a question how much these streaming platforms are hurting cinema gross.

Aquaman 2 isn't going to make money, the very best case I could see a very slow crawl to $400 million, outside the Mean Girls musical really nothing new of note that will be taking away seating for January. More realistic number however is $250 million, maybe $300 million if oversea legs hold better.

I think the new Superman movie will do well, not billion dollar well but over $600 million for sure, but the DC movies after that initial hype of a fresh start I'm not sure about.

My favorite part of this show was the take on Hugo Strange. The "Doctor at Arkham who becomes obsessed with criminality to the point of becoming a criminal" thing was kinda neat, more interesting than the usual "He's an evil psychologist who does evil things because reasons."
I also dug the look and the slow, pensive voice.

He was also the villain who came the closest to utterly fucking up Batman in the episode where he tells Batman that he unleashed a zombie virus on Gotham, then exposed him to the "antidote" which was actually a powerful hallucinogen that operated on suggestion. Strange told Batman and Robin he'd unleashes a zombie virus, so that's what they hallucinated. Insidious shit, he nearly got Batman to expose the rest of Gotham to the same shit.

The Batman was rough at the start, but kept getting increasingly better. There were a few bad design choices (Joker, The Riddler, the first Batmobile), but the writing and voice acting were always great.

And they have some good episodes in the later seasons. The season 4 episode "Seconds" was pretty goddamn good. Dude steals something and through a series of fuck ups causes massive destruction on accident, goes to prison for 17 years. Ends up learning how to go back in time 20 seconds, tries to use it to get his revenge on Gotham only to accidentally kill his own son which stresses him out hard enough that he manages to go back in time to before he ever fucked up.

That episode was great, and the ending was particularly happy.

As crap as the final seasons and newer shows were. The arrowverse probably had a more successful run than the DCEU. The fact DC and WB didn't capitalize on the popularity of Green arrows during the first two seasons of Arrow shows how intellectually challenged both companies are. Before CW Arrow, Oliver queen was one of the most hated DC superheroes. He still is. Even Linkara hates the green arrow for being an accidental caricature of liberalism.
 
Alright I saw new aquaman in 3D. As a life long aquaman fan I had a blast.

It's not as great as the 1st one, that was a love letter to flash gorden and was pure kino.
I still enjoyed lost kingdom thoroughly and Id wager its the best post synder film to be had.

The Bad or Questonable

They killed off William Dafoe with natural causes offscreen! that really sucked, especially how they brought back literally everyone else.

A fair amount of the jokes did not land and a couple times felt like it was trying too hard to go for a marvel approach,

There's a lot of buzzword talk about climate change and global warming. Not too insuferable within the context of what they are saying but slightly annoying.

Amber Hurd is in a decent chunk of the movie in the beginning and end.
To be fair, her role is respectable. It's just such a shame that the one stable, hot, traditional fictional red head has a bitch of an actor.

The Good

It's a solid, fun adventure movie. if there's any one element that feels weak, the locations and setpieces keep switching up enough to give it a lot of Varity and energy.

The action, 3D and music is kickass.

Black manta is awesome. They continue from the first one and faithfully make him full on comic book badguy.
I especially liked the set design for his ship and the crew. He's in the rare position of being an underdog bad guy and manages to sell it for all its worth.

They bring back Dolph and Giant crab JOHN RHYS-DAVIES! has a bigger supporting role.

If you love Patrick Wilson you will love this movie. Aquaman busts his ass out of jail and they have a really great sibling rivalry throughout the whole rest of the movie. I thought they pulled it off better then thor and loki did. They change a lot about his character in comparison to the comics, but seeing as how this is gonna be the last one, I liked it,

This movie is a satisfying conclusion to aquaman's Arc. Sure I want more aquaman, but if this is it? Im cool with that. It's incredibly ironic that out of everyone in DC's roster. Aquaman has gotten the best possible coverage.

Conclusion: Movie is pretty great. It's just a victim of circumstances and Warner bro's being fucking idiots.

Watched Scooby-Doo! & Batman: The Brave and the Bold. I was genuinely surprised at how well the 2 franchises fit together. In a version of Batman where you have Detective Chimp and Kamandi the gang of Mystery Inc. actually totally fits. It's easy to kind of imagine them as lesser crime fighters.
Hearing Jeffrey Combs voice The Question again was fucking great. He was among my favorite choices of voice actor for a DC character that wasn't the obvious Kevin Conroy, Mark Hamill, Carl Lumby, Tim Daly, and Clancy Brown.
They did some really great bits in it too. Like Shaggy and Scooby doing their "Pretend like nothing weird is going on to fool the villains" thing on Bane and Blockbuster only to have Batman just straight up say "There's no possible way that should have worked." cracked me up.

Honestly, not a huge fan of Scooby-Doo, but combined with Batman: The Brave and the Bold it was actually fun.
 
Well I was dead wrong, Aquaman 2 is already above $250 million world wide, with the lack of new movies out in January $400 million+ seems like a lock, not sure if it will make a profit from the cinema run but with other markets (Streaming, dvd, VOD, TV licencing) should make a profit at some point.
