Out of curiousity, what parts don't feel grounded to you? Is it the monster men stuff? I took them as the "miracle exception" that every writer gets one of when writing fiction 😅 I'm starting to realize I really only like superheroes as pulp-y vigilantes, and they really only work in the timeframe of 1900-1960's, at the latest. Anything past that and I can't really square the circle of heroes having secret identities in a time period where security cameras, phone tapping and other technology are more widespread. Not gonna spoil it here, but I WAS worried about the cliffhanger ending of issue 1, since it seemed like they'd pull a "he survived because he's the GODDAMN BATMAN", but there was a semi-plausible resolution and explanation to it that I felt was satistfying.

No, it's nothing super specific. It's just a tone thing. It's hard to quantify but it feels a little too big supernatural-ly to me. This specific reinvention of the Monster Men is part of it, because it's sort of plague-like but I don't think that's really it. It's the overall vibe of the story and art. I like it a lot, don't get me wrong. I was just hoping for something that felt a little more like those early Detective issues do, but with modern writing. those early issues even with the vampire monk and the monster men have a different vibe. It's the scope of it doesn't feel grounded.
 
I recently stumbled upon some images that surfaced a month ago as leaks for that upcoming Batman cartoon by Bruce Timm, Batman Caped Crusader.

Ngl, besides Two-Face, I like the designs. Alfred was actually fat in the comics before the movie serials of the 40’s portrayed him as skinny, and Harley’s outfit feels more in line with a harlequin clown. The execution of the redesigns, however, are all over the board. Renee, Gentleman Ghost and Onomatopoeia look good, but Harley is a bit too chubby and Two-Face isn’t grotesque enough IMO…

I like Batman, Catwoman & Alfred and think the rest are terrible. Onomatopoeia is okay, but really he's a character I hate that they're using, I'm not really a fan of him but besides that he's one of those it really works on a comic page and in any other medium it wouldn't be effective. I assume they just wanted to use some lesser known guys but there are better choices than that one for a cartoon.
 
They're very classic era. That's not a bad thing though we've seen with the X-Men 97 cartoon that you can keep original designs (minus Rogue's butt) and it still feel disconnectedly modern. Have to see what they're like animated. Two-Face is a little low-key and I don't like Harley because the fat face and tiny eyes are so unexpressive. She just looks sulky. But we'll see what it's like in an episode. Maybe it'll work for their version. I don't know who Natalia Knight or Onomatopeia are.

I thought most of the designs there are okay. Harley's new design is just weird and it's gonna take a while to get used to, and Two-Face's design here is just generic. Though I do like Clayface's design here

Renee is weird as they seemingly turned a Latina character Asian for some reason. Not a fan of Gentleman Ghost, I think the pure white is just too good of a design, and I hate how he has a face. Harley Quinn and Two Face just look wrong or way underbaked. The rest are fine, but nothing special, with Clayface being the only one that really looks good.

I think a big issue will be that Brave & The Bold already went for classic designs and did them all way better. Gentleman Ghost, Two Face, even Harley Quinn all got better 40s-60s designs in that series.

I wonder if we will even get to see them in motion? WB pawned the series off to Amazon, along with Merry Little Batman, which didn't do well so...

Onomatopeia is a character Kevin Smith created for Green Arrow, also showed up in Superman & Lois oddly enough. Interesting they're using a relatively new character like that.

yeah actually looking into it a bit more she actually looked like that from the mid 1940s all the way until the late 80s. I was under the impression that look started later than it actually did. Outside of the 1960s tv costume that just was catwoman's costume the entirety of her existence pre crisis. I thought it came about around the time of the TV show but I was off. I thought the weird literal cat head mask lasted longer but that's probably just because when I was a kid I had a bunch of those Batman Chronicles golden age reprints and I don't think I realized that they only covered the first 5ish years.

I think that's the intent actually I'm not positive but I believe this is actually going to be the early 1940s or lean into the aesthetic harder than BTAS did which is the coolest thing about this show, I really hope it premieres soon they've been working on it for years now. fuckin' wb selling it off to Amazon is retarded I bet with Invincible & X-Men 97 doing numbers and their Superman anime having been critically well received (although I thought it was kinda wack) they're kicking themselves for being so fuckin' dumb. people are sick of shitty superhero movies but they aren't of superhero tv animation if it's good.

Speaking of X-Men, somebody asked James Gunn if he'd considered allowing a similar continuation to Justice League Unlimited. the short of it is he said no. and I have a few thoughts on this.
#1) James Gunn needs to stop answering every stupid ass question on twitter. In fact, he needs to delete his socials. I like some of his movies but the guy is a narcissist and literally can't go 5 seconds without answering some idiots question on his DC stuff. James shut the fuck up, you don't owe those faggots anything focus on making the shit quit talking to strangers online.
#2) good. Without Kevin Conroy there is no fucking way I'd watch a JLU continuation. add that with the fact that we already know where that universe goes with Beyond, and that they tried this exact thing in comics even bringing back some people who worked on the show, and it sucked. Leave it alone. Plus JLU has an actual series finale it doesn't need more.
