I've finally got off my ass and watched the new super man
What I like

• The character of superman is almost there, being the kind hearted goody two shoes who's so charismatic that you can't help but root for him.
• Mr. Terrific was nice.
• Overall was an ok movie.

What I disliked

• Really fucking weird CG and action scenes, it's baffling that anyone saw the majority of the action scenes in post(especially the one with The Engineer and the superbots) and thought "yeah, this looks cool". Hawkgirl specifically is the most baffling part of the movie to me.
• A bit too many characters and not enough focus on any of them. I don't think Superman had the chance to be "cool" until the last scene of the movie.
• I say superman is almost there because again I can't really see him as this guy who yells at people when he gets angry or in a heated discussion(Lex asking about the dog or the interview with Lois). He wasn't as charismatic as he needs to be. I'm not a fan of the Dark Animated movies universe but I liked Clark's first appearance in that. I don't think superman should "act" cool or cocky or humble, I think superman simply "is" and I don't think this movie landed that too well most of the time.

I'm vaguely interested I guess but not enough to watch any of the movies in theater.
What are Gunn's definitive plans for Batman in his universe, if any? Will he subsume the Reeves/Pattinson movies or just do his own thing with his own actor?

Louis should have dried up at that whiny attitude and dump him... If that was their first date. They're supposed to be together for a while, and yet, Supes acted as if he was a teenager.

While I've already pointed out that it's shit dialogue in general, I think your kid is picking up on his instability. Supes is supposed to be a positive male role model, but when he's a guy that admits he gets scared and freaks out over #SuperShit, he comes across as whiny and weak of spirit.

If Supersoy is meant to be Gunn's SI, and he scares off children, does that mean Gunn might be an actual pedobear? *thunk*
Supes in this movie is the perfect representation of the male ally, being defeated constantly, whining like a bitch instead of showing strength and being a good role model, etc. Oh, and Gunn edited the damn dog to look like his.
The fact the movie pussied out and didn't have Lex shoot the damn dog instead of a rando Indian no-one cares about, and then makes a cringe joke about it immediately after, tells how "safe edgy" it is.

I've read somewhere claiming that the editing team was the same as The Great Gatsby(2013). I haven't found the proof for that but if it's true it certainly explains a lot.

I saw Superman a week or two ago, and while I still really liked it, I had an issue with the political commentary.

The first act has Superman being called out for interfering in a foreign war before learning his parents wanted him to conquer Earth is an interesting conflict. It makes you think about how much a superhero would interfere in political affairs.

Then the third act reveals that the entire war was orchestrated by Luthor, and the Boravia is so cartoonishly evil, Hawkgirl can kill its leader without any negative consequences.

So what's the point here? Was Superman right to threaten the president of Boravia because PEOPLE WERE GOING TO DIE? Was Lois wrong to criticize him for his actions potentially making a war worse?

The not-so-subtle message in TLJ is that both the Rebels and First Order have people on their side who never got past their trauma enough to stay firmly on the side of light. It’s a structural analysis that sounds smart until you remember that these characters (no offense) aren’t exactly Russian novels.

I’m not saying James Gunn is on Rian Johnson’s level, but Superman's moral compass is built on being a corny, flag-humping conservative. Reimagining him as something different is harder to justify. So instead they try to soft-pedal it, Lex tossing out accusations that Superman’s not a real American, and so on.

I feel like Superman Returns is the better version of whatever the fuck Gunn's version is. It actually is a campy, respectful interpretation of the character. It was made by people who respected the original films more than the actual source material, not even comic fans, and they still made a better movie than Gunn and his Yes Men.

Just embrace that he's the ultimate super hero. Make him stoic, sometimes corny. Superman's heroism is always best showcased through his actions, and it doesnt have to be CGI bullshit with giant monsters, it can be him holding up a collapsing building so everyone can get out of the building safely, or saving a plane full of people. He's really been "human" the whole time, you just have to get a writer that actually understands the character and what he represents.

Issue I take with James Gunn is that his slate is pretty pathetic even if Superman is a good base. Not enough heavy hitters have projects yet and too much focus on no names.

James Gunn discovered a formula with Guardians of the Galaxy that he's driven into the ground: take lesser known characters from the comics, completely revamp them, and shove them in awkward, forced comedic scenes. Unfortunately, no one besides Gunn cultists give a shit about the Justice Gang, Creature Commando's, Harley Quinn, etc etc. He's trying to create his own little (fucking massive) corner of the universe, a la Dave Filoni, where he has sole creative control, even though he doesn't need to do that considering he's the head honcho. Now why would he do that? Simple, to avoid the scrutiny that'd come with his depictions of more popular characters.

Even then, some of these characters, despite not being heavy hitters, have been featured in media and are semi recognizable even to people who haven't read a comic. My daughter recognized Mr. Terrific and Hawkgirl from the JLU show, because we have all the DVD's and she watches them on road trips. She wondered why Hawkgirl wasn't more important in the story because her understanding of the character is that she's a big time, important superhero and a core member of the Justice League. Just because James Gunn didn't watch or take inspiration from these sources, doesn't mean others haven't, and it will become increasingly obvious to a large number of people what these movies are as he continues to work his "magic", diluting characters and turning them into aspects of his own personality/those around him.

People are too broke to go the theaters, even with the Regal points I've saved up I only get a free popcorn every 3 movies I see. My wife doesn't even go to the movies with me and my daughter anymore unless its a movie thats really important or nostalgic to her, because it's just needlessly cost prohibitive and expensive. If you're a single guy living in a studio, trying to save up your money, you might pick the theater on occasion for a date, but you aren't frequenting it nor paying for that stupid subscription model where you get a free movie every month. The movies aren't good enough to warrant the cost of a ticket anymore, the last two movies I saw in theaters that actually made me feel like I got something out of them, were Killers of the Flower Moon and Megalopolis. Say what you will about those movies, they had actual narratives and something to say beyond setting up franchise that can be sustained for a decade. I respect Megalopolis even more after finding out how it was made, Coppola was literally writing scenes on the fly and changing the script throughout the production process, and was self funding the movie with his war chest. I think people are going to start re-assessing these scarce gems of the 2020s and herald them in the future, its just that right now the vast majority of film going audiences are NEET slop enjoyers who want to see a movie, be told how to feel about it, and move on.

Avatar will probably be a hit, because the whole point of the movie is seeing it in a theater, in 3D/IMAX. Its a 2 hour visual effects showcase with an inoffensive, non controversial plot/characters. It still doesn't negate the over all trend.

Anyone here buying/consuming those dc compact comic releases? Bought Watchmen and all star superman shortly after they came out and they are great with nice quality paper but my copies of Kingdom come, superman birthright and superman/batman all have weird cheaper paper that looks and feels like construction paper.

the only film i'm really hyped for is the running man later this year, it feels like an old school action movie. like the sort of shit film John Travolta or Christian Slater would have starred in in the late 90s.

It probably would have done worse if it was cheap to look at too. You know, because the writing is bad, maybe Superman IV levels of bad. Gunn was just the wrong person to make this movie and should have delegated it to someone else.
