DC Pride's Batgirl story gives her friend Alysia Yeoh the spotlight, and her moment to shine as a trans hero gives a new twist to the name Batgirl.
Warning: Contains Spoilers for DC Pride 2022

The iconic DC Comics superhero Batgirl is being completely redefined with a trans hero. Since her debut in 1961, Batgirl has taken on many forms. Her run began with Katy Kane as an attempt to give Robin a love interest, then continued from there to give various women a chance at the cape. Some notable women to take the mantle have been Cassandra Cain, Stephanie Brown and even the Huntress for a brief period. The most notable alter ego though has been Barbara Gordon, daughter of police commissioner Jim Gordon. She's the most recognizable character to wear the mask and has even taken the role of mentor for Cain and Brown after being paralyzed by the Joker in The Killing Joke and becoming Oracle.

During Gordon's era as Batgirl in the latest line of comics, she's also made a few new friends including Alysia Yeoh, a trans woman who was Barbara's roommate for a brief time. She works as a bartender in Gotham and is a strong political activist. Yeoh and Gordon became very close friends over the years with Yeoh feeling comfortable enough to even come out to Gordon as trans in a sweet moment between the two. Gordon still hides her secret identity from her though, wanting to make sure she's safe. Still, the two have met from time to time with Gordon as Batgirl and become friends. Now, the latest annual edition of DC Pride shows that Yeoh may one day take the mantle with a unique new spin on the name.

In the DC Pride 2022 story "Up at Bat" by Jadzia Axelrod and Lynne Yoshii, Alysia Yeoh finds Batgirl in need of assistance. She's been injured in a fight with Killer Moth, so she's given directions to a hideout in a clock tower to help treat her wounds. Things aren't as safe as they think, though, when Yeoh discovers that the spike that injured the hero contains a tracking device, leading to an ambush by Moth. Knowing that Batgirl is unable to do anything, Alysia grabs a costume from a long display of previous Batgirl outfits and puts it on to take on the villain her way. She makes the name of Batgirl her own with a bat as her weapon decorated with the Trans Pride flag. She literally becomes "Bat-Girl."

This is a clever spin on the name because there are so many other Batgirls that share the mantle. Yeoh has found a way to make her temporary standing as the hero her own and gets to shine as the strong woman she is. Plus, it's a clever play on the name to make her immediately discernible from those heroes who came before her. Above all though, she manages to show that she's a fighter in more ways than one. Her biggest arc in the story is wondering how else she can bring her fight for equality outside of her activism. She manages to prove herself by taking on Killer Moth in her own way. Batgirl is so impressed in fact that she lets her keep the suit.

Yeoh isn't the first trans superhero to make her way to DC canon, but she's certainly a welcome addition. She has the intelligence, wit and quick thinking necessary to wear the Batgirl name with pride. Plus, with the way she decorates her weapon to fight off villains, she becomes great representation for the trans community in the comics industry. Alysia Yeoh is completely redefining what it means to be Batgirl in the world of DC Comics, and the way it's handled is great since it opens the doors for anyone to take up the mantle one day in the future.

This is kind of shit I would maybe react with shrug because I don't read these fucking comics, but fucking pride flag on a weapon is just fucking pure cringe. Why don't you make gay character that has "I AM FAG" on his fucking superhero costume so audience will know for sure your comic has some LGBTSDFYPD+ representation in it. Like fuck man, I am a fag but wish they didn't add any trannies or fags in their comics or shows if they can't make them normal fucking people but need that identity written on their forehead.
Want to make a trans super hero fine but having a trans pride flag bat is beyond pandering, to the point that if troons had any sense this would piss them off but thankfully for DC they lack sense.
You gotta admit, putting tranny colors on a bludgeoning weapon is pretty spot on to what's been going on.

Like everyone else said, can't wait to see the sales.

They're going to do the same thing they did in Batwoman with Ruby Rose. Where she was super willing to tell people she was batwoman fucking constantly but it was an even bigger deal to tell them she was lesbian, like it's harder to be a lesbian than a vigilante superhero.

100% they'll do the same with being trans.

Wasn't Batgirl an impetuous athletic tomboy who fancied one of the Robins? Or Alfred's niece or whatever in the film?
Betty (later Bette) Kane was the original Bat-Girl who debuted in Batman (vol. 1) #139 in 1961. She was a tennis player and niece to Kathy Kane (the original non-lesbian Batwoman) who crushed on Robin and who retired to pursue a career in Tennis before Barbara Gordon showed up in Detective Comics (vol. 1) #359 six years later. She later came out of retirement to join Titans West pre-New Teen Titans, but again retired and that incarnation disappeared after Crisis on Infinite Earths.

A new version appeared post-Crisis, this time named Bette Kane, who became a crimefighter because of her crush on Dick Grayson like her previous incarnation. This time she took up the name of Flamebird and had some adventures with the Titans and Young Justice. Her new moniker actually comes from the Superman mythos as the Man of Steel and Jimmy Olsen moonlighted as Nightwing and Flamebird in the Bottle City of Kandor with Dick taking the Nightwing name as a tribute to Superman.

Of course it did. The thing troons love most is forcing women out of their own spaces and taking over. How better than by forcing itself into the main character role?

I thought the tranny weapon of choice was a Golf club. Anyways using your tranny identity to literally bludgeon poor white people to death is an apt analogy.
The bat may be a reference to a comics cow. Mags Visaggio (deadname Brian Visaggio) once threatened to take a baseball to the teeth of cis people. I think it was a threat toward Richard C. Meyer AKA Ya Boi Zack (or Simple Zack in the Comicsgate thread).

If I were a Batgirl fan, I wouldn't be after this. Shit like this is exactly why manga is outselling western comics, but the retards in charge of publishing this can't quite seem to figure out why people don't want to read comics anymore. I used to like a fair amount of Marvel's output, until I felt like I was getting lectured by a gender studies professor every other issue, so I dropped it and have't looked back

I'm trying to work out what the various girl-Batmans ever did to deserve any of this?

The only connection to trannies that I can conclude is that one of the Batgirls died young.
The original Batgirl was Commissioner Gordon's daughter who got into crime fighting while wearing a female Batman outfit at a costume party and beating up Killer Moth.

Second Batgirl was a mute illiterate asian who was trained at birth to be a martial arts killing machine who took over the Batgirl mantle after Huntress briefly took it over because Batman fucked off and vanished for about six months when Gotham got declared "No Mans Land" to keep hope alive only to be stripped of the mantle because Batman is a moral fag who disliked that Huntress DID kill bad guys

Third Batgirl was Spoiler, the daughter of D-List villain Cluemaster who disliked having a super crook as a dad and decided to "spoil" things by becoming her dad's arch nemesis. This version was Tim Drake's fuck buddy and was killed off in gruesome fashion because editorial and Dan DiDio hated her guts, as she was pushed HARD by Chuck Dixon as Tim's OTL at a time when DC wanted a love triangle between Tim, Superboy, and the second Wonder Girl.

Nothing screams hecking real and valid like waving around a gigantic phallic symbol.

I guess Batgirl is the most appropriate heroine for the troons to appropriate given that the character has a long established history of being on the receiving end of debilitating and crippling injuries. Maybe Robin, and could use Death in the Family as a way to push the 41% to 50%?

I mean Batman was always about the mental illness so at least it fits.
