Religiously if you convert Orthodox you're considered just like any other Jew. If you convert with anything else you're a larping non jew. Realistically, if you're a convert there's some friction, especially if you're black or non white in some way. Black people get it the worst, example being that Nissim Black was unable to get his children into religious schools because they disapproved of his job as a rapper until one of the most important rabbis in the religion told them to let his kids in. It's getting better but it's taking time.

The Torah and commentaries and Megillat Ruth all strongly enforce that you should treat converts like the real thing, which suggests that since time immemorial there have been people who want to convert, and Jews who viewed them with suspicion. In the sense that all laws and rules set by people tend to ban things that have actually happened. (Why set up speed limits if nobody speeds? etc.)

So ig the answer is that ideally, no, one should not be prejudiced against converts, but IRL yes converts are kind of a second class citizen.

I installed mezuzahs on multiple thresholds in my apartment. My thoughts were constantly interrupted by intrusive Jewish thoughts. Is it Sabbath? what time is sundown? Does this granola bar contain dairy? Am I pronouncing this Hebrew word right? What phase of the moon is it? Where are we in this batshit service..?! Is the Cloisters Museum within my eruv? When was my last menstrual period? Is this a fasting day? Is that beef kosher? Am I losing my mind? Am I feeling the zeal of faith yet?!

There are prayers to be said before taking into a bite of any type of food, while washing your hands, you say Shema when you wake up in the morning and when you are drifting off to sleep, and there is even a prayer to be said after you use the toilet. If you relative dies, there is a prayer you need to say every day for the next 100 days after their death. There is literally a prayer for anything you could imagine. They're short, and you say them often enough for it to become second nature. I still say some of these activity prayers. It begins to feel obsessive and compulsive. The men in their kippahs and prayer shawls (and if the spirit moves them, phylacteries), swaying back and forth, seem obsessive and compulsive. I could never replicate this gesture of fervor. It's so profoundly autistic it makes you cry.

But paradoxically, the more hardcore fundamentalists religions are the sects which grow the fastest. On some level, many people seem to find it attractive to join a religion that micromanages your life the way ultra-Orthodox Judaism will, even if they privately break some of the rules. You can see that by comparing the ultra-Orthodox Jews to the Reform Jews. Reform Judaism is dying out, meanwhile the ultra-orthodox are growing. So are fundamentalist Christians, and splinter apocalyptic Mormon cults. In general, the more hardcore a religion is, the faster it grows. (Not least because these fundies usually demand their followers have lots and lots of kids.)

And while even some of those people are going to watch porn on secret cellphones, or eat secret bacon, or have sex while the wife is bloody or w/e, you're not going to find ultra-orthodox Jews chowing down on Big Macs in public or coming out as gay or otherwise flagrantly breaking the rules, because they would get pushed out of the shtetl if they act that way. And getting shunned from their communities is a big deal, because fundies like ultra-orthodox Jews and Mormons have been systematically denied the education and training necessary for them to function outside their ghetto.

Dude, don't high-road me. I'm glad that you are serious about your faith, but there's no way you can vouch for every other Mormon that they don't drink coffee behind your back or whatever. I can't vouch for my co-religionists like that either, and I wouldn't even try. People worship not because they're perfect, but because they are not. I only bring up ultra-orthodox Mormons (e.g. FLDS) because I think they mirror Orthodox Jewish sects in some key ways: they are both super conforminst, isolate the flock (Mormons do it geographically, Jews do it both geographically and culturally), have extremely granular rules for everything, the rebbe/bishop is always right, look the other way when CSA happens, you get the idea.) Basically I'm trying to say that some of the penguins' behavior is not unique or inherent to Jews, but to super-fundamentalist religions. The "loss prevention" strategy of making your next generation of faithful unable to live outside the ghetto because the people in charge systematically denied teaching them how to read English or set up a checking account etc. is a common feature of fundamentalist religions everywhere.
