Do people actually report single word posts or is it something that a mod randomly sees and bans you for it? Also isn't it only for A&N?

Noncontributory posts in A&N are a tempban. This includes one word posts, copypasta, and reaction images. The rule is that if someone else could make that post, it isn't worth posting. If it could be stated in the form of a sticker, use the sticker instead.

You have to get a feel for the jannies, this is generally true for most of the threads Hardin Useful_Mistake moderates.
