Debate @The Saltening on the ethics of making sure a snake is fed so it doesn't die

@The Saltening powerleveled in Sneedchat that he has a roommate who owned a snake that unfortunately died a month ago due to neglect from his roommate and @The Saltening himself.

Why should we care?

• Because animal abuse is gay, and I will make fun of anyone who cannot be fucked to properly take care of an animal
• Salt refuses to take ownership of his actions despite Salt not being the direct owner of the snake, he still lacked the ability to take care of the animal
• 
• Salt doesn't know how to take care of a snake, despite being aware that snakes eat mice
• Salt claims that even if he did feed it, he could've "overfed" it
• Salt believes that we think that he should enslave himself to his roommates and clean up after everything, when we are clearly trying to point out that even though the snake is not yours, you shouldn't let an animal die on your watch
• Salt was asked if a dog was introduced into the equation, would he pull the same stunt
• Salt has a dog that he takes care of very well

As someone that's raised snakes, if you're not comfortable or accustom to feeding them then it's likely the snake wouldn't eat anyways. It depends how reliant on its keeper the snake is for triggering the instinct to eat.

With that said, if he was aware that the snake wasn't being cared for he should have contacted whatever the authorities are in the area for such things.

If it's not a close room mate and they simply live together but don't have much connection then it's kinda a shitty situation but I don't think he's responsible for taking care of someone else's animal. Dogs and common animals are easy to take care of compared to snakes, and most people know instinctively how to take care of those animals; snakes, however, are an animal most people wouldn't feel comfortable trying to feed. Especially if it's aggressive/lashes out.

You are effectively adopting a negligent owners pet when you start caring for it, I can understand not wanting to take control of the situation in that way. He should contact authorities about the animal abuse or really keep trying to set his friend straight and appeal to whoever might help. What I did do was talk to my other room mate who is pretty close with him about it. I do not think anything came of it.

I know you probably know more than I do since I don't have personal experience with owning snakes, but have known people who do and I don't get the complexity of dropping a mouse into a cage so the snake can eat it

I've always enjoyed feeding snakes. It's my favorite part of the snake ownership proccess

Then I don't really consider it your issue beyond reporting it. You should have reported it, however that's about it.

If the snake died after you tried to intervene directly then the roommate would likely pin it on you -- they seem like that kind of scummy.

Snakes are wonderful animals, but they are horrendous to care for compared to mammals, and honestly I doubt just a month of not eating would have lead to its death -- normally takes a lot longer than that to starve a snake, depending on species.

There's a very good chance it wouldn't have survived even should it have been fed -- it's likely it had other conditions amplified by already having a shitty keeper. Your roommate should never be allowed to have animals though.

That's a best case scenario for a snake and feeding it, however a lot of snakes will not eat unless specific conditions are met. Some snakes require hand feeding or stimulation of the hunting instinct, otherwise they won't actively see the feed as food. Some require the mice or feed to be warmed to a specific temp to simulate it being alive, while others require the keeper to actively prompt feeding. Snakes are complex in behaviour due to how exotic they are.

A lot of snakes are extremely difficult to feed depending on how they have been raised and conditioned.

I used to raise them as a teenager. I miss having snakes but they aren't an animal I'd actively keep now that I have a career due to how complex their needs are. I think the lesson to be learned here isn't so much that Saltening is a shitty person or animal abuser, but rather it's better to contact the authorities about such things.

His roommate seems like scum, but it's not Saltening's responsibility. Seems like an instance of contacting the Landlord if the roommate isn't cleaning up the body or keeping animals to then die.

no. Nobody was asked to care for it. He has had this snake for a long time, long before I ever showed up. He never asked anyone to do anything despite my other room mate caring for it in the past.
