Debate @The Saltening on the ethics of making sure a snake is fed so it doesn't die

You shouldn't keep animals if you can't take care of them, but it's a snake, who gives a shit?

Maybe we can argue about abusing your pet houseplant by not watering it next.
im glad you don't own any reptiles

Okay, so there was no agreement for him (salt) to care of it while the owner was away?
no

a stray cat or some opossum is going to probably eat it.

no. Nobody was asked to care for it. He has had this snake for a long time, long before I ever showed up. He never asked anyone to do anything despite my other room mate caring for it in the past.

Any idea of how many years? If he's had the snake for that long then it's likely been taken care of. Potentially old age/disease creeping in and feeding aversion?

Snakes are complex animals that are capable of experiencing pain. Do you also kick puppies and shit on kittens? People that are fine with animals suffering or go out their way to make a statement about how they don't care about an animal suffering are reserved a special place in hell.

According to him, him and his roommate work opposite schedules and he's only seen him feed the snake twice

he just refuses to be confrontational with his roommates. based on what I can see, he likes being passive aggressive and letting shit build up rather than addressing it head on
this is not entirely true. We have confronted him about the dead snake and other things. To no effect. He just doesnt do it. Nobody wants to kick him out either. I have had this conversation with my other room mate.

Moral of the story, don't share shit on the internet. You're a retard for sharing a stupid story with people who didn't need to know, and your roommate is a dipshit for not know how to take of his own pet.

When I worked at a pet shop mother's would come in to buy "snake food" for their kid's snake. They would say they didn't want a live mouse because it was cruel to feed a snake a living thing, so they would ask for a dead mouse. I'd have to take a mouse into the back room and "make" a dead mouse for them. I think that was probably worse than feeding the snake a live one.

I find it weird that someone would just randomly stop feeding their snake. They're hard to keep at the best of times depending on the species. so if it survived years it would have been cared for.

It is very possible that the snake refused to eat or had some other condition that prevented it from eating -- when that happens, there's almost nothing a keeper can do to feed it. My last snake from my early 20s did the exact same thing for no apparent reason, and despite trips to the vet and literally spending hours each day with every feed possible, it perished.

They can survive months without eating so for it to just up and die from missing a feed is unusual. Sounds like something else was a contributing factor.

no, but asking a couple of questions is helpful to avoid wasting everyone's time. Sad the snake is dead, but I am not convinced it is his fault. The owner seems incompetent if anything.

He was actually full of Trump derangement syndrome and decided that it was indeed time to tread on snek.

As for it being left outside it's kinda an ehhhh depending on how you view the sacrament of the dead; throwing it in the trash seems disrespectful, and burying it would only lead to scavengers digging the yard. It's probably best outside so that other animals are able to take it for feed, as others have said. Return to nature type deal. It's not pretty to think of doing that to an animal like a dog or cat, but snakes are normally live or direct feeders so it's just completing the circle of life that they were still part of.

I assume he just stopped caring for it one day. I do not know jack about snakes tho. That room mate does have a track record of being extremely lazy from what I am told and seen. It is possible he just got bored and stopped caring and nobody noticed.

Maybe, but snakes are fairly hands-off when it comes to pets. The less interaction they can have from their handler the better for most of them. If he's that much of a piece of shit then please ensure he never has another animal.

I feel like if he did stop caring for it there would be more signs. Snakes are very clean animals, but their habitats get stinky (and very fungently so) when not cared for.

Either way he sounds like a cunt.

He was told about it. He said he was going to clean it up after work. He didnt do it. He still has not done it. Do I just keep pestering? Like IDK what to do. We pester him about other things and it doesnt work.

Snakes aren't exactly loving animals I would endorse as a pet. Calling animal control on your roommate is also easier said than done, since I assume they pay for half of everything, otherwise you wouldn't need a roommate to begin with. Good luck living with someone you got charged with animal neglect for the remainder of your lease.

I don't know, that's all I've got. Letting an animal starve is pretty amoral. There's not a lot of benefit of doubt I can give.

Landlord, duh. He can be a lazy piece of shit all he wants but someone owns the property and likely doesn't want their yard filled with dead animals.
