Debate @The Saltening on the ethics of making sure a snake is fed so it doesn't die

I feel like if he did stop caring for it there would be more signs. Snakes are very clean animals, but their habitats get stinky (and very fungently so) when not cared for.

I find it hard to put any blame on Salt here. The owner of the snake is clearly neglectful in hindsight and can't even be bothered to give his pet a proper burial, but prior to the snakes death could Salt have really known how well it was or was not being cared for with no formal knowledge of snake care?

I have a far more interesting version of this situation to discuss. A guy I used to know, lets call him Jeff, was renting a room at his house in an effort to offset his mortgage and expenses. He took on a tenant who paid 3 months rent in advance, but then stopped paying rent and grew flagrantly disrespectful to Jeff in his own home. When Jeff began the eviction process by issuing a notice to vacate, the tenant surprisingly did so, but left behind a pet cat. Jeff is mildly allergic to cats in such a way that the cat being confined to the tenant's quarters was not an issue, but Jeff is unable to interact with the cat directly. Still he kept feeding the cat until he ran out of the catfood that the tenant also left, all the while trying to contact the tenant about the cat to no avail. When it became clear that the tenant had abandoned the cat, Jeff attempted to contact animal control and other such services in his area, only to find that all but one of them did not deal with cats, and the one that did deal with cats had no room for more cats. Ultimately Jeff decided to simply put the cat outside to fend for itself. Should Jeff have continued to care for an animal he did not want that he was allergic to because its owner abandoned it? This was years ago but when Jeff told me about the situation all I was able to say was that I was glad it wasn't my problem. What would you have done in Jeff's shoes?

I'm pretty autistic when it comes to animals, and I don't think I could see myself leaving a cat out to die in the wild. Maybe I sound retarded, but in a way, it feels to me like an Old Yeller situation or like when WingsofRedemption shot a dog because it was sick or something. However, the allergy part comes into play.

I don't know, maybe trying to sell the cat on Facebook Marketplace? Giving it to someone who may want one? I get these may seem stupid, but I think letting a cat fend for itself would be a last resort, no?

Goddammit this is turning into reddit tier debates. Firstly snakes are advanced pets not a fucking cat where you can just get food from the supermarket and put in a bowl. Secondly no person who isn't a snake keeper knows how often the snake should be fed. Thirdly why the fuck are you yelling at a bystander for not caring for advanced pet that he doesn't know how to feed or handle?

Like bruh its not a cat or a dog . Most people are scared of snakes let alone feed and care for them.

If he tried those options he didn't mention them to me. My understanding from what he said was that strays thrived in his area so I'm guessing he thought the cat would be fine outside and didn't see it as being left to die. I didn't know the guy super well but he didn't strike me as the type to be wantonly cruel or indifferent. I got the feeling the whole thing was hard for him.
