That's pretty much how news is done. In fact they probably do even less work since they don't even have to research, they just get a press release that they retype "in their own words". These institutions are full of the same people that do things similar to writing lolcow threads. They collate internet information and present it. They only reason you believe it more than anyone else regardless of the information, is because an authorative name of the institution is attached. And they are still people, they can still be bribed, co-erced.
Despite CWC being chronicled here, would you simply change your mind if CNN started running stories in the opposite? Just a hypothetical.

Another reason was how they criticised fact-checkers for going after parody news sites (especially Babylon Bee) with the reasoning of these fact-checkers fell for these sites, therefore they aren't reliable.
