Debate user @Gog & Magog on the merits of long-term, highly-educated internet discourse.

My mind has changed a lot over the years from internet arguments. Almost nobody ends an argument with "wow, you were right all along, I see the light now." They end the argument with some smarmy quip or negative rating or other petty thing, then they go stew about it and wonder why they're so bothered, and then maybe look into it later. You both refine your argument a little. And maybe, once in a blue moon, you might, at some point, change their mind. Or yours. But it's never gonna appear who won right away. It's something that slowly builds over time. The discourse here has changed a lot over time, as well as the broader internet and culture. Maybe, once in awhile, we advance understanding, get closer to something like the truth. I'm always looking for the best picture of reality, the best estimate humanity has at what the "truth" is with the least amount of bullshit. I find all the different discussions and opinions so interesting. This is why I love the free and anonymous parts of the internet. Only without censorship can ideas really go to head to head. And eventually something interesting spawns out of it.
