I have no idea if Josh actually uses this feature, it just made me laugh and I didn't want to post a thread outside of the retard containment zone
I've been playing around with Xenforo since I wanted to see what the forum looks like on the back end and found this hilarious option in the admin settings

Has anyone been feeling discouraged recently? Does it contradict the spirit of sneedposting to automatically broom your most based users?
Additionally, I'd like to experience being (((discouraged))). Thank you in advance

I want to wholeheartedly discourage the developer of this feature from continuing to be alive.
From what I can tell on their meta forum it's apparently been a feature of Xenforo for at least 13 years. Keep it in mind if you use other forums
Don't really care. It's not like it is going to stop me from being obnoxious and shitting up threads. If anything now that I know this I will just double down on making his browsing experience worse.
I think it's pretty funny as long as it's used sparingly, if he does use it at all. There's a couple pink triangles that probably need it.

That is so fucked.
Having used XF myself and having some familiarity with the backend/admin panel, I was aware of this feature. I was flabbergasted when I saw the different options you could set on it. You could literally have it randomly redirect someone to Goatse, if you wanted. I never actually placed anyone on Discouragement though because it's a really faggy concept.

XenForo's discourage feature works by running sleep() on threads, which enables a discouraged user to DoS attack the site by F5'ing - something they are likely to do because pages don't load.
ChatGPT says it's got a few different ways to discourage.
XenForo's "Discourage" feature is designed to subtly deter a user from participating in the forum. When an administrator discourages a user, the software introduces inconveniences for that user. These may include increased page load times, random error messages, or difficulties in posting. The intent is to frustrate the user's experience without providing a clear indication that they have been sanctioned, which may lead them to naturally reduce their participation or leave the forum.

This feature is typically used as a less confrontational alternative to outright banning a user. However, the specifics of how the "Discourage" feature works are not extensively documented in public resources, as part of its design is to be somewhat obscure to the discouraged users. For the exact implementation details, one would typically refer to the official XenForo documentation or directly explore the forum's administrative settings if they have access.
So this means you don't use the feature at all?

Oh so it's actually retarded and hurts Xenforo sites more than the user they're trying to nudge away.
