for a young man, clean shave is the way to go. or if you're lazy and don't want to deal with the ordeal of shaving every day, at least trim it down to like 1mm stubble.

First, where is the hair growing? What’s the pattern of growth, direction of growth, hair density, texture, color, growth rate? Some men have perfect mustaches and beards that just grow in like that, but others have patchy beards or need to shave certain areas to maintain a symmetrical look.

There’s no particular age in which beards will definitely ripen and be good to wear. I know two men I no my life who had perfect facial hair in college and the most they do to groom it is a biweekly scissor trim. But my own dad is in his 60s and never developed a beard he was satisfied with, has gone clean-shaven his whole adult life to avoid the embarrassing puberty beard.

The one truism I can say of beards is that they should be symmetrical down the midline of the face. Wildly uneven beards are always going to look bizarre.
