Anything from MtG to Slay the Spire to Dominion to Gwent to Loop Hero and everything in between, discuss this genre here.

I'm new to deckbuilding and have been enjoying Slay the Spire. What have you been playing?

Anyone got tips for refinishing? I'm supposed to help a buddy redo his and the wood still gets punky like every single year, I think we're using the wrong kind of paint.

Me and the wife mostly play MtG. We've been looking getting some living card games though. Used to play a lot of L5R and Battletech back in the day. Played the LotR's card game too at tournaments. Also enjoyed the old WoW CCG but that scene quickly died. Quite a few deck building games on Steam I enjoy.

Check "the spruce" I think that's what the site is called.

You got a power-sander or resurfacer? Use it first. It's a pain in the ass, but if you didn't get a good seal on the wood the first time, painting over it again doesn't help a lot. Then find a good sealer, both Lowes and Home-Depot have large drums of outdoor deck sealant that should work a charm.

I did legit think this thread was about the wood working before I looked at where the thread was located.

Home Depot rents deck sanders. They're heavy af and you'll want to check the screws are well recessed, but it's fast and efficient

I remember playing Marvel Vs System back when I was still in school. The game was dead and discontinued when we got into it, but because of that, booster boxes were stupidly cheap at something like $30 each. It was a ton of fun until one of my friends at the time looked up the most broken overpowered deck in the system and bought a bunch of singles to complete it. That pretty much took all of the fun out of it.

Not sure if its just video games or tabletops but:
Star Realms is a solid deckbuilder made by ex MTG players. You buy a box and you got a game for two people, want 4 player just buy another box. They have expansions and different starter boxes to suit your taste if you want to expand or not. This can also be found on Steam.

Legendary Encounters: Aliens is a really good Deck Builder Co-Op game. There are VS rules but they are kind of lame in the base game. Basically you can play through the first 4 movies and each Scenario adds a gimmick. The cards used are based around 4 characters in their respective movies. Basically the scenarios boil down to 3 objectives which once completed you win. You can mix and match Objectives/character decks if you get bored with the base scenarios. I could go over more of this game but I know they released an expansion for it to play as the Aliens and not sure how good that is. I did get the Legendary Encounters: Predator one and found it ok not as good due to the game being split between playing humans and Predators for the scenarios where Aliens was more focused.

Edit: just found out they have a LE Aliens Covenant expansion, no idea if that one is good or not either.

Are the deck/bag/engine building boardgames count?

Just saw Dominion in the op. I am fucking dumb lol.

I play MtG Arena/Commander too much. I enjoyed Slay the Spire but I think Monster Train does the same basic concept better since it feels like you can do much better just building on synergies without having to turn your starting deck into a 10 card combo deck like every successful Slay the Spire deck seems to devolve to.

Grew up playing YuGiOh and MtG. Fell in love with Slay the Spire from the moment I saw it in beta. I've always liked deckbuilding games even though I'm not great at them. It's still fun to build a deck that fits you perfectly

I never really got into MTG (I always assumed it was too elitist) or YGO (my local scene was/is filled with murky fuckers) but I rediscovered my love for the Pokémon TCG during the late HGSS-early BLW era (for those of you who don’t follow the PTCG that’s basically early 2011) and it’s kind of been stuck to me ever since.

I’ve seen its highs (that usually happen during a new Gen’s early TCG sets) and it’s lows (that uaully coincide with periods of where a low number of deck types are considered viable in the Standard format, the “Mewtwo Wars” period of the TCG is a good example of that) and I’ve weathered it all, but the rise of collectors and investors buying up stock is kind of making me feel iffy about TPCi’s ability to keep the actual card game relevant.

Used to play Yugioh and Magic as a kid/teenager. Got tired of Yugioh, got out of MtG because I couldn't afford it as a teenager. These days I play Dragon Ball Super with a very small group. No local scene here. Shares a lot of mechanics with Magic, and most decks are pretty cheap to build. The archetypes are usually dirt cheap, and while the in colour staples can be pricier, they can be swapped between decks of the same colour no problem for the most part.

Waiting for the new Magic set to drop so I decided to try out Pokemon.

Why hasnt Wizards implemented the pack codes that Pokemon is using?! I could go to the store and buy physical packs that come with codes that I can then input into the online game and generate a pack. I would actually buy physical MTG if I could get that kind of value out of them. Hell it doesnt even need to give a virtual pack, just give me a rare wildcard.

Anyways Pokemon is a ton of fun, I like the theme deck only queue that online has. I only get matched against other premade decks so as a new player I dont feel super outgunned by anyone that spend money net decking.

Im very tempted to buy an Ipad just for my Arena addiction though. I just want to grind ladder while I use a treadmill or take a shit!

...got out of MtG because I couldn't afford it...
I was in the same boat but in a different sea. I largely shifted to the Pokemon TCG's online client during the SM era and that hasn't changed much, TPCi will release products that make playing certain meta decks easier but they're usually a set or two behind.

For example, there are two new League Battle Decks coming out in June that have powerful VMAXes in 'em but the meta has largely shifted away from those two VMAXes and onto decks featuring other VMAXes or a the new VSTARs. There are also products called “Trainer’s Toolkits” that contain a preconstructed group of Trainers, Supporters, Stadiums, Special Energy, and Pokemon that usually form of the backbone of many meta decks along with some themes card sleeves, damage-counter dice and a tournament-legal flip-die, and various acrylic markers used to play the game.

Funnily enough there is a form of meta in the TCGO’s Theme format. If you see a player running Soaring Storm (a Dragonite-centric theme deck from Unified Minds), Relentless Flame (one of two Charizard-centric theme decks), Unseen Depths (One fo two Kyogre-centric theme decks), the Rillaboom Theme Deck from Sword & Shield base set, Torrential Cannon (a Blastoise-centric theme deck from Team Up that’s a sister deck to Relentless Flame), and Vivid Voltage’s Charizard theme deck then you’re facing someone that wants to finish the client’s versus ladder.

Oh, and once TPCi decides to bring their Pokemon Trading Card Game Live app out of its closed region-locked beta test and into a wider release, say goodbye to the TCGO and anything that’s unique to it.
