Opinion Democrats Should Be Stopping A Lawless President, Not Helping Censor The Internet, Honestly WTF Are They Thinking - Techdirt: Your New Home For Liberal Blackpilling

It has long been clear that the GOP, as it is today, has a death wish for our Constitutional order, but that’s a subject for another post. What’s more relevant is that, at this point, one could easily construe that Democrats would like our Constitution to die too. In part because of how enfeebled they have so far been in resisting the lawlessness exhibited by the Article II branch of our government—although that, too, is a subject for another post. (Standing against the Vought OMB nomination, and slowing his appointment process, is good. But it’s not enough, and even though it’s a good start, it doesn’t forgive all the missed opportunities to slow the damage everyone could see coming from a mile away and provide the leadership needed to assure the public that they had their back so that the public could then, in turn, back them.)

What is a subject for this post is how, in bizarrely continuing with any sort of normal order in the face of an actual coup taking place under their noses—literally right down the street—the thing that they are trying to do with normal order is censor the Internet.

It is suicidal idiocy to do either of these things, let alone both. There is no political math that could justify Democrats not only not doing everything in their power to defend Congress’s Article I powers, but then using those powers in ways the First Amendment expressly tells them they can’t.

And yet that is what at least some Senate Democrats have gone and done by moving forward KOSMA. The bill, which is a “bi-partisan” bill initially pushed by Democratic Senator Brian Schatz (in partnership with fellow Dem Chris Murphy, along with Republicans Ted Cruz and Katie Britt) is sort of a an attempt to create a “more palatable” version of KOSA, but which is still a censorship bill at its core.

KOSMA reared its ugly head again this morning in a Senate mark-up session and passed through it easily with Democrat support and no debate at all (barely even a mention of it). And even if some of that support may have been superficially pro forma, to move the Senate along so that it could get to addressing the larger issues at hand, any support was still too much support for what this bill proposes to do.

Because what this bill intentionally proposes to do is the same extreme thing that KOSA proposed to do: censor the internet for young people. And yet Congress would attempt to take such drastic legislative steps despite, or, in the case of the GOP supporters, perhaps because of, how much of an incursion it is on the rights of so many: the teenagers themselves, all the adult Internet users who will be impacted, and all the Internet speakers who now won’t be able to speak if this law hits the books.

When kids’ parents are being fired from government jobs, their friends rounded up, their schools forced to be racist, and the democracy they were promised to grow up in fully imperiled, it is the height of lunacy for any Democrat (looking at you, Senatosr Cantwell, Schatz & Murphy, but thankfully not you, Senator Markey) to think that they are thinking of the children by doing the Internet equivalent of banning their books. Not just because there are so many bigger fish to fry, especially right now, if we really cared about their interests, but because by censoring the Internet we are taking away everyone’s tools to be able to organize and fight the true danger at our door.

To support it is just dumb, in so many ways. After all, Democrats should know better: way too many had joined the push to ban TikTok, and we saw how stupidly (and unconstitutionally) that move worked out. And when the Trump Administration is blithely ignoring laws en masse it makes no sense to give his election denying henchman Pam Bondi and her DOJ a fresh new one that they can wield against anyone they see as a threat to Trumpian power. But all that is not even the end of problems with Democratic support for this bill.

The bigger problem Democrats need to recognize, and fast, is that it teaches the electorate—assuming we ever again have another free and fair election, which is currently not looking promising—that Democrats don’t really care very much about the Constitutional order Trump is actively destroying any more than he does. Which means that, for those who would want to resist this lawless president and his open threats to the limitations on government power the Constitution prescribes, there will be no one to vote for to stand up for its defense.

Because pushing these unconstitutional laws, or even simply nudging them through a markup session, especially while seeming to ignore the grossly unconstitutional actions of the Trump Administration, tells the public that if they want to choose someone who cares about the limitations the Constitution places on government power they can’t choose Democrats to respect them any more than they can choose anyone in the GOP. But without being able to elect either party to defend our democracy it will be game over for it. And the kids will now have an even bigger problem to deal with than the Internet.

t another Harris PotUs run
Bet you any money no.

Hillary didn't get a second shot.

Why would the person who did worse get one?

She'll definitely run, yes. She can't help it, she's a deluded ideologue who can't make a living any other way except public office.

But it'll be her pre VP pick performance from 2020 all over again - 3% and not a single primary to her name.

She will never make the ticket.

When Kamala got 47% or so of the vote, and many downballot races were stolen by weeks of counting?

How are they doomed, exactly, when arguably the worst candidate in modern history still got 47%?
That by itself has sealed her fate, a Democrat winning less than the majority of popular vote was something they said could literally never happen post 2008.

Chucklenuts made it happen.

How are they doomed, exactly, when arguably the worst candidate in modern history still got 47%? Seriously, I do not understand this reasoning.

The machine that did that is falling apart right? It take money and lots of it to grease the wheels that keep the political machine running.

Yes in safe places they can print ballots to their hearts content but we saw that with active poll watchers (remember Laura Trump spent 9 months and 20 million to train and recruit tens of thousands of poll watchers to counteract this) that's not really possible. 2020 was a unique one off where they could just print out millions of ballots, and they did 2024 was short something like 8 million votes, but that ain't happening on Trump's watch and no doubt all future Republicans took notice of how effective well trained poll watchers are. The few time they called shenanigans and the GoP lawyers showed up the electoral drones backed down. No hidden counting this time, no surprise curtains, no boarded up windows, no suddenly bursting water pipes where everyone had to evacuate except for 1 or 2 vote talliers. Just a straight count.

Democrats will always get a large % of the popular vote just because they dominate the big cities but it's not the popular vote we care about.

IMHO we now have a ship of fools in the DNC, seriously go watch the nominations and voting it was a clown show, the donors ain't going to bankroll a group of Progs who want to dismantle the economy and create communism 2.0 in the US. With no big money, no MSM propaganda, no social media control and no way to sneak in extra votes where it counts they will have to run on policy and Dem policy is terrible.

Plus add in the defeated attitude which will depress Dem supporters even more as Trump runs rampant. The bigger his success the bigger the impact on their turn out. If and I say if, Trump keeps shit going for two years and without the MSM and Twitter to rile up the masses a lot of Dem voters will stay home for the mid-terms seeing it as pointless.

Don't discount the loss of Twitter and shrinking of the MSM following. Those were powerful tools the Dems used to get their bases all worked up and pumped to turn out. X belongs to Musk now. BlueSky is a joke and the viewership of the legacy media is crashing.

Again my big question is can the Dem's find another Obama type person who can unify and re-energize the masses. That would be a real problem because as you said Democrats are the far larger party and Republicans only really win when Democrat turn out is low so keeping the Dem's fractured and demoralized by the Trump Train is key.

does that help? I struggle with expressing my thoughts sometimes on complex issues.

God, I don't think any of these people actually understood what DEI actually was.
They really don't. I recently heard someone lament that they "can be fired for being gay now" and that "minority workers protections were removed"

I honestly wonder what world these people think they live in

Then the DNC was just taken over by the most woke retards in the whole party...fucking David Hogg was voted in as vice chairman and all the older party members were ejected off. They adopted the most retarded woke rule set for candidates you can imagine...really go watch the video of the conference it's so bad it's bordering on horror.

The powers the controlled the DNC are too busy scrambling to cover themselves and infighting about who to blame for the loss and are not watching what the lowly Proggie plebs are doing and now they've lost the DNC with the Proggies taking over and kicking out all the old guard.
It is hard to imagine how they'll dig themselves out of the BioLeninist hole they've dug themselves. They've spent so many years "uplifting" and "empowering" the most Spiteful Mutants, letting them push out the competent sociopaths who used to keep a lid on the insanity and give them a reasonable public face, but now it's just retards with no impulse control that repulse normies.

You'd think after the election they'd try to tone it down, but they either haven't acknowledged the problem or don't know how to stop it. The DNC Vice Chair elections were nonstop obese dinduishas giving "I'm a blackity black Woman of Calories and we finna run dis like Beyonce!" speeches, and after a decade of "black girl magic" propaganda it's hilarious how nobody can shut them up.

Same deal with troonery and infinite illegals...nobody normal likes that shit but the hyper-Progs have made it their religion so you'll need an absolute purge to get rid of them.

Yes she did. She was SUPPOSED to be elected in 2008. It’s why she carpetbagged into the Senate seat for New York, to prove she was “electable” (when a rotting dog’s carcass would win in New York if it had a “D” next to it). Then she started campaigning like mad once her term was up in 2006. Obama made her Secretary of State after he won, just to stop her and her followers from sabotaging him.

That’s why losing to Trump broke her, and a fuckton of democrats. It’s why “It’s Her Turn” was an actual campaign slogan, before it became a running joke.
