UN Denmark joins some European nations in banning burqa, niqab

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Denmark joined some other European countries in deciding Thursday to ban garments that cover the face, including Islamic veils such as the niqab or burqa.

In a 75-30 vote with 74 absentees, Danish lawmakers approved the law presented by the center-right governing coalition. The government says that it is not aimed at any religions and does not ban headscarves, turbans or the traditional Jewish skull cap.

However, the law is popularly known as the “Burqa Ban” and is mostly seen as being directed at the dress worn by some conservative Muslim women. Few Muslim women in Denmark wear full-face veils.

Justice Minister Soeren Pape Poulsen said that it will be up to police officers to use their “common sense” when they see people violating the law that enters into force Aug. 1.

The law allows people to cover their face when there is a “recognizable purpose” like cold weather or complying with other legal requirements, such as using motorcycle helmets under Danish traffic rules.

First-time offenders risk a fine of 1,000 kroner ($156). Repeat offenses could trigger fines of up to 10,000 kroner or a jail sentence of up to six months.

Anyone forcing a person to wear garments covering the face by using force or threats can be fined or face up to two years in prison.

Austria, France and Belgium have similar laws.

The justice ministry and the police now will write more detailed guidelines. Those “should be very concrete” as to what will be banned, said Bjoern Elmquist, a lawyer who has been a prominent opponent of the law.

If it turns out to focus only on women in the niqab or burqa, it could amount to discrimination against a minority group and hence be against the law, Louise Holck of the Danish Institute for Human Rights told TV2 television.

Good.

I get rather unsettled whenever I see someone wearing the niqab or a burka (and it is more common in my neighbourhood than I care to admit) because there is a dehumanizing element to it. Communication is also as much nonverbal and it's easier to humanize a person when I can see their face and instinctively read nonverbal cues. All these "progressive" apologists can fuck right off when they attempt to argue that it's boon because of diversity or that it's to protect a woman's modesty. No, the niqab and burka solely exist to dehumanize women to the point where they are a slab of meat for their husbands to fuck and pop out a brood of children. Its purpose is to remove people's ability to empathize with women and thus make it easier to look the other way from true oppression.

This is a piece that particularly stands out to me. I find it very hard to believe any woman would choose to wear those full-body-covering trash bags without the threat of physical violence and emotional abuse from their husbands, families, and Islamic society as a whole. There's all kinds of awful things that are inflicted upon women who refuse to dehumanize themselves with burqas and niqabs; if anything can be done to punish the perpetrators and embolden women to break free of such restrictive cultural pressures, then that's fucking good.

They mentioned people forcing others to cover their face under threat of violence can also be fined or jailed.

Progress. Hopefully more countries follow suit. Tired of mudslimes gaining the upper hand. I don't particularly care about what goes on in their culture/to their women, I just enjoy pissing them off. Especially when whites bring the banhammer down on their fucked traditions.

Never happen in the US though. The only time it would be constitutional is when needed for identification, such as in courts or for drivers licenses photo.

I live in the USA and I've yet to see a burka or niqab in the wild, only head scarfs and usually colorful ones that wouldn't fly in Islamic countries. Granted I've rarely traveled outside my home state.

All the time I've spent in DC and Baltimore I've also never seen one myself. I know there are mosques around. The only time I've seen a muslim is at work for a large corporation.

He would do his praying bit on the floor, but then we also had a hasidic jew working there. Had the benie hat on and the white undershirt. Had to leave before nightfall on Fridays.

He brought his own microwave in to put under his cubicle...he also forgot a baked potato in there that he found months later.

There are so many black ghetto women around here in full niqab. It would become a race issue right away. In fact, it's only hoodrats trying to be Muslim that I ever see in niqab. They really go full on. You'll see their daughters wearing headscarves the size of curtains that are obviously made for adults when it's a little too early for them to cover up so much. All of the Middle Eastern women wear hijab.

I'm glad that it's being banned in Denmark. It's extremely oppressive. Niqab is not mandatory. I don't like the idea of the clothing police. However, in western countries we don't typically hide our faces in public and Denmark is not a Muslim country. When in Rome...

There may be a small portion of women whose husbands and fathers try to forbid them from leaving the home because niqab is banned. Hopefully jail time might persuade them and the younger generations will become a bit more liberal.

Same here, even when traveling around the country I'd never see them. The only time I remember seeing a group of them in the full body covering was at Disney World, and these were clearly tourists from the middle east. There was a group of about five women wearing all black, head to toe, walking around Southern Florida in summertime with all the heat and humidity that entails.

They are all over the place in and around Dearborn, Michigan and the part of the South side of Chicago (Bridgeview, Hickory Hills) so much so that it is called Little Palestine

The local fresh market actually has a dedicated muslim staff because many of the women in niqab or burqa refuse to talk to or hand money to non-muslims.

Good on Denmark. They've been the antithesis of Sweden's retardary for some time. It's not a surprise they don't like each other. Mostly from Sweden's side. I don't think many Danes give a fuck.
I have a friend who is Danish and he gets made fun of a lot and couldn't give a fuck about it. Hell, even I do it and he has metal skin. nothing gets to him. Danes really don't give a fuck about your feelings or your religion of peace.
