Fashion designer Kate Spade has been found dead in her New York apartment.

Police are investigating her death as an apparent suicide.

She was found dead in her Park Avenue apartment in Manhattan at 10:20 local time (14:20 GMT) by her housekeeper, a law enforcement official said.

Spade - who once edited fashion magazine Mademoiselle - was well known as a designer of clothes, shoes, and jewellery, but was best known for her accessory line.

Stellar business career
She co-founded Kate Spade Handbags in 1993 with husband Andy Spade. The company - whose stated aim was to design the perfect handbag - opened its first store in New York in 1996, and now has more than 300 branches worldwide.

It is recognisable for its distinctive logo which features the spades playing card symbol, in reference to the designer's surname.

The company's bright and colourful patterned designs became a trademark of its products.

Kate Spade sold her namesake brand in 2007.

It was bought last year by New York rival designer Coach in a deal worth $2.4bn (£1.8bn).

She and her husband then set up another design venture, Frances Valentine, named after their daughter.

Kate Spade legally changed her name to Kate Valentine (Valentine was her grandfather's middle name) in 2016 to "separate the two worlds".

Quirky fun and country club
By Natalie Sherman, BBC News business reporter, New York

In the 25 years since Kate Spade's founding, the name has become a byword for a certain preppy style.

The former fashion editor told the New York Times she was looking for function, sophistication and "some style" when she launched her line of handbags in 1993, uninspired by other purses of the era.

Her look - bright colours and clear lines - quickly gained traction, appearing on the shelves of upmarket New York department stores like Barney's.

In 1999, Neiman Marcus took a majority stake, sealing the firm's ascendance in the fashion world and as a brand that embodied quirky fun, without straying too far from the country club.

The New York Police Department confirmed the 55 year old's death under her birth name, Katherine Noel Brosnahan.

The designer left behind a note, police said, but declined to discuss its contents.

The Spade family released a statement asking for privacy as they processed her death, the New York Times reported.

"We are all devastated by today's tragedy. We loved Kate dearly and will miss her terribly. We would ask that our privacy be respected as we grieve during this very difficult time."

What has been the reaction?
News of Kate Spade's death has led to many tributes to her work.

Designer Diane von Furstenberg and Steven Kolb, executive officer of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, released a joint statementexpressing their condolences.

"The CFDA is devastated to hear the news of our friend, colleague and CFDA member Kate Spade's tragic passing.

"She was a great talent who had an immeasurable impact on American fashion and the way the world viewed American accessories."

Tldr: Something must have been troubling her for her to commit suicide. Whatever it was, money sadly couldnt help. I believe she leaves behind a young daughter.

I wonder if they're going to market that brand of scarf?

I know it was red. Doesn't sound very seasonal atm.

I already ranted about her stupidity in the RIP thread, but she was always a difficult and nutty bitch, so this isn't a shock. People tried to help her for a long time, but she refused. She was also known for saying rather odd/ungrateful and over dramatic shit that personally, always rubbed me the wrong way. (Like look up some interviews/quotes she's given about her daughter being a typical kid and not appreciating Kate's "career".)

The really fucked up part is it sounds like she tried to blame her husband in her note to her daughter.

It was reported that the note to her daughter said, “Don’t feel guilty this has nothing to do with you, ask your daddy!” Which is a pretty obvious passive aggressive “ask him, he knows because it’s his fault” bullshit.

Her husband Andy and her were separated and he had moved down the street and was looking to buy a permanent separate residence. Kate did not want a divorce.

Her sister is saying she suffered from depression and bipolar disorder for years. I can understand depression and despair driving someone to suicide but trying to blame the father of your 13 year old daughter for it is fubar.

She basically left her daughter without a mother and tried to poison her relationship with her father at the same time. What a crazy nasty bitch. Even if your husband leaving is the sole reason you decide to kill yourself in your Park Ave penthouse you don’t tell your daughter that and put that nasty bitter pettiness into the last message you leave your kid.

Maybe it’s best for their daughter because it sounds like Kate would have been a unstable nightmare to have as a mother if she was willing to do this to her family over a divorce. I have a feeling she had used suicide threats as a way to prevent Andy from leaving for years.

The fact that he was living in a new apartment close by makes it sound like he was trying to leave her slowly, in stages, to try and lessen her crazy revenge reactions and make sure their daughter was safe. I hope father and daughter can build a happy, stable life after this.

(Also rumors that the daughter was not genetically related to Kate, that she used donor eggs and her husband’s sperm to get pregnant via IVF. I hope so because that would mean she would not be in danger of inheritaning her Kate’s mental illnesses)

Im pretty sure back before she sold her company, the rumors on thefashionspot where always exactly that. She'd shriek like a harpie threatening to off herself or tank the business so her husband would pay her the attention she felt owed. She was also apparently awful to work with so much so that even suppliers were relieved when she cashed out - iirc she was described as being needy one moment and furiously calling stockists and suppliers and off her rocker making demands the next.

It's just a selfish, cruel thing she did to her daughter but in a way probably for the best.

Money also gives you more problems and stress if you’re not good at managing it.
That's why if I ever won the lotto I would buy a ranch and live like Burt Gummer. I luckily have a small immediate family I am close with. So any extended family knows damn well to stay away from me. Also, this is why you have few but true friends. People think the good life is about living in some mansion in a gated community or enjoying the nightlife with a bunch of rich assholes. Really it's a pretty empty life. I have seen quite a few rich people who look like they're ready to just jump out the window of their high rise apartment.
Sale when?

But seriously though, F.
Prices so low you'd think we lost our minds and are about to hang ourselves!

Too soon?

Welp, one less rich crazy white bitch on the planet. I'm gonna make me a steak to celebrate.

THEY CANT KEEP GETTING AWAY WITH IT

Imagine being such an emotionally stunted, mentally ill, politically obsessed cuntbag as to actually use someone's death to ree about a politician who hurt your feefees. Fuck. All the people who hated Obama wanted was a genuine birth certificate...

Yes, she had a unhinged reputation. The threatening suicide or harming their business to get leverage over her husband fucked up. I wonder if he's actually relieved at this point. Kate's sister said they had been trying to get her into treatment for bipolar disorder for years...and she was drinking heavily the last five years. I'm sure it was a nightmare for her daughter and husband. He probably would have left years ago if he didn't have to worry about the kid.

On the subject of the kid it seems like her "retiring" to be a mother was the first attempt at trying to fix her crazy. She was unstable and unhappy running KS so the idea was let's sell the brand and she can stay home and be a super rich full-time mom and that will bring her peace and happiness.... and that never ever fucking works. Individuals in denial about their mental illness, and those around them, think major life changes like marriage, divorce, having kids, moving, new jobs, etc... will fix things but they are just external solutions to an internal problem. It always just ends up compounding the (esp the marriage/kids part) misery.

The "new" brand she had started recently sounds like another futile "fix" for her bi-polar disorder.

Depression can be a bitch.

It was manic depression compounded by relationship problems. Instead of treating her mental illness she decided to blame her husband for wanting to divorce a volatile, suicide threatening, bi-polar alcoholic.

Kate's sister apparently had almost talked her into going for in-patient therapy at a posh clinic for the super-rich but she kept backing out at the last minute using the excuse that she feared it would hurt her "brand." As if being a crazy manic-depressive alcoholic would help her brand.

I mean she was a multi-millionaire, famous, with luxury residences in NYC and California. You’d have to be crazy to think you couldn’t build a pretty sweet life after a divorce with all that to work with.

With the Francis Valentine label, she actually changed her name to Kate Valentine. She was very, very into the whole "I have to be the brand" manicness evidently. I always found it sorta strange/bittersweet that Kate Spade - the company - did better once she left. It became a brand with a specific character. Kate Spade - the person - I always felt, wanted to mimic the character of the brand she left, more so than the brand was built on a foundation of her.

There's another designer who she reminds me of, an Australian named Alannah Hill. Alannah is extremely messy and manic, not an easy person to work with and who had the brand that she was so entwined with taken away from her when she got too messy. Since then she has started up another brand which is basically just Alannah Hill 2.0. But she's still messy and manic.

Actually, come to think of it, that happens so much in the fashion world, it's like rinse and repeat.

What the fuck.

So I'm not a detective or medical examiner or anything, but I can't be the only one thinking they might wanna recheck to make sure this was a suicide.
Ehhh, I see it as a fuck you to the vultures of the paparazzi. A kind of “ no you can’t analyze every line on my face for my emotions to paste them on every tabloid on the planet”.

Reminds me of Daniel Radcliff wearing the exact same outfit everyday when he worked on a play, rendering the paparazzi shots useless.
