1. Dunno. By that logic, Jim shouldn't be breathing either. Besides, Bugs had no breathing issues when he went to space. So I'm going to assume cartoon physics are in play (though being in a white void probably helps). As for why they're there, fuck if I know.
2. The artist confused Jim Hawkins for Johnny Depp, clearly.

I found a guy who's like obsessed with Lyra from Pokemon. He traces all of his artwork and a good majority of it is just Lyra in some of his fetish fantasies. Also he ships his Megaman Oc with her so thats there.

You can tell what an artist fetishises by the enhanced detail in their artwork.
