They brought about a whole era of music just by existing, a fusion of punk and pop that can only be replicated by very few bands.
They were very proud of their outstanding ways. It makes Devo, a hard band to ignore.

i agree, they aren't really underrated. Like they were on SNL before their first album released and their music video was played more than like any other back when MTV first launched. They pretty much launched their sound in the US. They're as underrated as NWA are in terms of gangsta rap. Basically everyone knows who they are and if you open up a book on their music genre they're practically the fucking face of it. beyond that they're considered iconic of the 1980s in general, practically being a stereotype of the era. if you had something set in the 1980s you had to include some DEVO. obviously no one talks about them now because its been 40 years since their peak but they're the most iconic band out there. they only wore those stupid hats for like 2 months and its still recognizable

Fair but I just dont think they get enough credit for the influence they had on music.
Like I dont think a band like The Scissor Sisters could exist in a world without Devo.

That seems to be the case for virtually every alternative rock band from the '70s-early '90s. I consistently see Boomers through Zoomers whenever I see one.
 
When it comes to weird-sounding bands from this era I'm more of a Talking Heads fan.
 
when I was introduced to The Devos it was on an unlabeled mix tape with them and some Oingo Boingo songs, so I tend to mix the two Weird For Weird's Sake Pop Rock Where One Of The Gang Does A Shitload Of Movie Scores acts if I'm not paying attention
also Devo was cool for working with Church Of The Subgenius

but yeah, I'd say they're about appropriately rated
