Oh boy, the story. Are they actually trying to turn Lilith into a sympathetic figure? Is that what's really going on now?
they did that in fuckin Sin Wars novels that came out 20 years ago, she's always been a tragic figure, a being born of pure evil that has tried to change her nature to a loving "parent" of a race she wants to win over her own kind.. but can't quite do it all the way, she's still a demon despite all her attempts to be anything but.

she's the mirror opposite of Inarius who cannot change, despite initially betraying his side to make Sanctuary, he views his people, humanity, as abominations, when he should realize that Angels will always view him as a traitor for making them, Lilith at least understands the reality, there's no going back, making humanity makes them their charge and their "tribe", forever.

Rushing through the campaign, warlock isn't as cool as I had imagined, already regret not going mass-skelly necro. One thing I've noticed though is.. why the fuck is the expansion amazon themed, but no amazon? Warlock seems like fanservice they pulled out of nowhere as opposed to just going "Hey, here's a new continent and you get to play one of them!"

Blizzard keeps doing it. same with Xalath and Sylvanas. Everyone loves beating up a dommy queen then come back simping her for.

probably because half of what Amazon does is slapped into Rogue, all they'd have is the Javalin and polearm shit, which might be enough I guess.

don't get me wrong, I'd prefer them to Rogue, and I'd prefer the aesethetics of Demon Hunter to both of them but here we are.

I think they did warlock because the Demon Mages were something very important to the setting but never actually made a class since the whole practice was super banned eons ago.

They basically neutered two classes into one build for rogue, having the rizz of neither. Thing is, they clearly gave the npcs some amazon abilities like reveal or whatever. You'd expect that from devs that care without it being bait for a new class, but I still don't see how warlock fits especially into this expansion more-so than just the "we need someone to use the enemy's powers againt him" illidan ahh type shit. At least in Legion DHs fit in.

I restarted my campaign roughly halfway in to play necro. I really like warlock and it has a lot of pets but constantly needing to keep them alive is the one thing I fucking hate about pets. Auto-spawning like the new skeletons is a bit much but better that way than having to run around spawning 3 kinds of skeletons just to keep your shit rolling.

Battle pass isn't at all appealing, more generic angel type shit. Glad we got to see more angels return but man, we're not going back to the high-fantasy of seeing them jump around and talk with that tinny-echo voice again, are we. It feels as if D4 is trying to be too realistic which is fine, just not after the NFL highlight reel that was D3.

Initial review, I'm still in the campaign.

Its better than any Campaign in Diablo so far, I wouldn't call the story telling fucking epic or deep but its better than what we had, the setting is way prettier and more varied than the various tundras and badlands of the base campaign (not that they were ugly, just sort of.. barren) and the bosses even in the base just story campaign have more mechanics and things to do, playing on expert while leveling a seasonal character can actually approach something of a challenge.

the customization is the best its been, though once you get to 35ish all the decisions have been made and now you just decide on which skills to max out, still way better than D4 base or D3.

Warlock is very good and pretty complex with like, just without legendaries, 6 basic build paths, haven't touched the updated other classes.

approaching the end of the story, will do endgame review later.

I'm enjoying it the most I ever have and they actually tried to give us a decent main story for a change. Which is a double edged sword because all the cinematic close ups of your character show just how fucking ugly the models are, good lord.

yea they aren't made for up close, that's for sure, though the Spiritborn Female model does better than most.

He looks suddenly asian for no reason
He Is Asian, Akarat was half Xianshian and half Nahantan, he's been depicted as essentially Japanese-ish forever.

He's just also Jesus Christ, complete with Lion motif, his entire life story expcept instead of being crucified he dueled Mephisto and scarred a Prime Evil forever then died

Okay plot discussion/campaign review.

first off, the campaign is good, simple as that, the whole thing is pretty damn good, its "just" long enough to get you from 1 to about 55-60, which puts you right near the level cap, the story is good/great at times, and the final battle with Mephisto is about the best ARPG spectacle battle you could expect.

now on to spoilers/plot summary for people who aren't going to play it, and my gripes that are more about story telling flaws than anything to do with actual plot point fuckups.

For people not paying attention to this expac, its about Mephisto in the body of Akarat, an ancient dead Jesus stand-in, he aquired it last expansion, his goal is to find, and utilize the Pools of Creation, where Lilith and Inarius and their demon/angel group created humanity, if he corrupts humans with his essence and dunks enough of them in the pool, it will feedback into the rest of humanity and turn everyone the way Mephisto wants, an instant loss for humanity.
you and Lorath go there, Warn the Amazon Queen, who falls for Akarat's Jesus Shtick after Lorath is tricked into cutting her throat and Akarat heals her, from there its just finding out how to kill Mephisto for good, which involves the prophecy stated at the start of D4's base campaign and brought up all the time, "A Blade of Light piercing Hatred's Heart" who do we learn this blade's location/ability from? why LILITH of course!
we Awaken her essence in our blood using the Sightless Eye again, Lilith begrudgingly helps us because she hates her father more than us, even though we killed her.
Then its collect the 3 shards that Rathma (her Son) Broke and hid away, meanwhile Mephisto using Lilith's blood in us, begins invading our mind and tearing us apart, Lilith uses this to peer into Meph's mind, Meph makes it sound like Lilith will kill us to hurt Meph.

We find a Rathma Golem/Homunclus with his blood, and get to finally fight the famous Necromancer Founder as a test, then we go inside Mephisto's mind and interrogate a memory of Inarius and finally get to fight Inarius (in a fashion ) where we find it was him, under torture who told Meph about the Pools.

Tons of Death flags thrown up at Lorath who is terrified of hanging on the Tree of Whispers for all time, and then Tyrael shows up, which is the start of my problems, Tyreal is fine, he's voice the same, acted the same as always.. no problems with him in a vacuum, however...

You go to the Horadrim's first base to fuse the Knife back together with a Horadric Cube, and do a bunch of shit involving the 4 founders of the Horadrim (one is Jerred Cain, Deckards great great grandfather) you do so and Meph fully fucks our mind, LIlith tries to help but its totally fucked, in the best scene in all of D4, Lilith chooses to sacrifice her existence to both empower us, and have us "cut the connection" by stabbing Mind LIlith, which all expac Rathma and others claim Lilith cannot change and will fuck us in the end, and LIlith purposefully changes simply to prove those voices wrong.

We come out of the Mindscape and Lorath went to get help... and we go find his fucking Corpse, the Amazon Queen, his ex-lover, killed him and beheaded him. we fight her, kill her after she calls on Akarat's blessing and gets corrupted, then all the other Amazons who pledged allegince get corrupted, we go down to the Pools, Stab Meph a little with the blade, then he goes full mask of, dunks everyone present in the corrupted Pools, and we fight, then HE dunks in the pool with us too, and he gets Embiggened, and we really fight.
we Stab him with the blade, which functions to erase beings from existence, and for Gods, sends them to the Abyssal nothingness forever, Meph gets Yeeted into the void, for all time.

we then go and Burn the Tree of Whispers because fuck them..

Okay so my problem, Lorath is dead, Donan died, Uru betrayed us, Neyrelle is dead, Lilith is Dead+, everyone is FUCKING DEAD, except Tyrael, who once again survives where he shouldn't, even the often stoic Player Character is pissed at the pure unfairness about Lorath dying before getting to see the battle won, and Tyrael, a man who has known Lorath since he was 17, barely reacts.
Its retarded, there's no one left to carry the narrative, they've killed every major good character, Tyrael not included.

I'm ok with this because I didn't like any of those characters and the story they came from. They've wiped the slate clean and can actually proceed without the baggage of breast milk stealing era Blizzard. Tyrael turning back into an Angel is an inevitability, and I'm looking forward to seeing that happening because they've earned back a little bit of my trust with this expansion.

yea well I liked Lorath, quite a bit, and its not so much what they did, its what can drive the narrative, Tyrael isn't enough, and its annoying he survives all of his apprentices/charges, and do so in such a ho-hum way, he doesn't even shed a tear at Lorath's death.
Donan, Lorath and Lilith were interesting characters, Neyrelle wasn't NEARLY as annoying as people hype, but she is still annoying, what's the point of setting up a "teaching the next generation of Horadrim secret keepers" if the next Gen dies before the Old, and then the old one dies brutally with no apprentices?

and its certainly not going to be a clean slate as the next expac is going to be about Baal, and the one after that, Diablo, if not multiples for each, all with our "Dark Wanderer" character here in D4, now completely and totally narratively adrift without a driving character.

which all expac Rathma and others claim Lilith cannot change and will fuck us in the end, and LIlith purposefully changes simply to prove those voices wrong.
which was the only good thread to the story for me. I dunno how many retards say that Lilith is evil, manipulative and cannot change etc, but that is simply wrong. Because ever since the base game, we saw Lilith in 3rd person cut scene, and how she laments about Rathma's death and her desire to protect/empower humanity.
It's a 3rd person cutscene, that means we saw her in her most honest desire, there is no one she's lying or manipulating there. It's logical that in game characters will find her suspicious because they cannot see those moments(except the MC who saw them, which makes them a total retard). But for the audience, they should have known it from the beginning that Lilith was honest about giving humans their freedom, not puppeteering them from behind, which Rathma himself got it wrong. So in the end, she didn't change but she got vindicated for her belief.
