Occupation: MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington since 1987
After being born to Jamaican parents in 1953, and getting through Cambridge and a number of journalist roles, Diane Abbott was elected as Britain's first black MP in 1987 and soon rose through the Labour Party's ranks in order for her to become the Shadow Home Secretary off her own back and talent.
