I'm a mega-Sparklehorse fan, so none of this is the take away from Mark Linkous's work or even the tracks I am posting themselves. But I think they fit the thread.
Good Morning Spider, the second Sparklehorse album, was pretty well-received at the time of release. While in development, a music executive told Linkous that he thought the song
Happy Man had a shot at being a real alt-rock hit single... so Linkous faded a bunch of noise and static and distortion ("
Chaos of the Galaxy") into and out of the track, basically marring it himself to avoid any threat of the commercial success he had an uncomfortable brush with while in the band
The Dancing Hoods.
I respect him for doing something so truly "punk" (and making something interesting in the process), but the original tune is so good. it sucks to be denied what could have been.
Thankfully, Linkous was persuaded to re-record and include an un-fucked-with version on an EP.
Much more frustrating is the brief track
Cruel Sun from the same album.
It's got a great, catchy melody... and has no proper ending, transitioning seamlessly into the next track through a cacophony of weird sound. It's nearly impossible to fully enjoy the track on its own because it ends before it begins and the last few seconds are so unpleasant.
It's exactly the way Linkous wanted it to be, but that doesn't mean I have to like it.
