Disco Elysium - Insane Drunken Cop Simulator RPG GotY 2019

Well, I finished it.
Good
  • Great characterisation, humour and story, and love the voice acting.
  • The artistic character portraits and painted landscapes fit really well.
  • Failed checks offer new content.
Bad
  • Buggy as hell. Even the final confrontation at the hotel permalocked each time until I doubled back to a new area.
  • Terrible fast travel system, which can only be accessed when standing in the same invisible area.
  • Map design decisions that seem only to exist to elongate the game and frustrate the player.

Did you play it on console or Steam? I’m only asking because “buggy” is something I would never describe it as and I’m wonder if it was just me being luck or if certain versions of the game have more issue than others.

I played the unmodded PC steam version.
If the underlying plot of Disco Elysium had been an incredibly well-written murder mystery with a perfect, satisfying reveal of the killer and his motives, not a single person would be saying "well, that doesn't matter because the game wasn't really about that".
It did have a well-written murder mystery, that if you did a thorough investigation clearly pointed to the drug-smuggling girl-liker, but they pulled a giant stick insect sustained elderly island sniper out of their arse at the end.

Another company appeared which has some original DE people and this one's just embarrassing. They wrote a manifesto.

By the time you finish reading this, naturally a simple question emerges:

They should just write (in English!!!) the damn other 5 books which were initially planned and not get too overambitious with something such complicated as a game. Whoever it is, I refuse to look up all their internal drama.
When the starved-for-content reader is already accustomed to the world (unlike the case of Sacred and Terrible Air, when it was oficially published), the books get proper editing and reviewing and co-authorship of the team, also there should be many pretty illustrations, true fans would be happy like a pig in mud, if the quality is consistent with the game.

These are the names of the books I found in some Tumblr post, originally from devlog. (No Truce became Disco Elysium, I suppose the Nr.1 volume was supposed to somehow connect books 0 and 2 .
(Translation of the Estonian text:
Dear fellow forum members. Because here seems to be such a good safe place, where few evil eyes dare to peek - the ridiculous knight figure and the stupid dragon's eye in the lava field scare away like talismans. And with dedication: to Sondor, who left young.
(They will be, of course, in the native language, but Google search will not find them this way))

What even are these niggers trying to say? A whole lot of hogwash about... idk, artistic creativity? Suits ruining their commie scam of enshittifying games into propagazing their worthless religion?

Was the setting really that good? It was very detailed but none of it mattered. Also im sure unless the book version of Disco Elysium had the mind stuff throughout it wasn't really an amazing work of art.

Well, when someone tries to imitate the game style with all the skills' lines in a fanfiction, I close it right away, shit's outright unreadable. I'd read a DE book even if I hadn't played the game, if it was under the New Weird genre (even if unoficially), with the world-building explained comprehensibly throughout the book and important to the story. In New weird, it would stand out as better of the books that fall under it in some way.

As for that eyesore of a page I opened (It set my computer on fire and gave me cancer, I am a cancerous mobilefag now): Was the webdesigner even paid? Trying to materialize a reward by sheer willpower (or whatever is the infra-materialism thing) doesn't count. I mean, capitalism and *bourgeoisie* bad, so selling the game and making profit is also bad, right...?

I would say the micro was way better than the macro at least in the game.

Players mostly care about the little things like lore about Harry, Kim, Martinaise and other secondary character not that much about the bigger picture, the pale, what's beyond the pale, the origin of the pale, the moralintern and shit.

I swear to god the people who sperg about AI and Machine Learning taking their video game Jerbs couldn't program a fucking calculator.
thats really the joke about it, not to go full 2000s comedy but every time i see the shit people whining about "jerbs" put out i think "i'd actually prefer the AI" Say what you will about Sven Stoffels it is probably going to be impossible to get an AI to make a great knock off of his work before probably most other artists of either his generation or of this era, because of how good he is at making illustrations and his person easily being unmentionable on AI without jailbreaking.

Do any of these spin-off studios have the original writer on the payroll or are they all glorified fan-fiction factories trying to shit out "spiritual successors" before the others?
I'm pretty sure the original writer was put in an asylum or some crazy shit. It was straight up villain stuff, but tbh it couldn't have happened to a nicer bunch.

I finished it recently. There were parts of It I liked and it allowed me to be more based then I expected, but you can tell the slant the game wants you to go with. In dialogue options concerning unions, workers and such your not given much lee way to be to the right of anything other than a centrist. And I'm pretty sure it overestimated my stray comments on certain things ( yeah sure kim, im a real racist, woman hating fascist for saying I wanted immigration curbed a handful of times)

I think my problem was I played it too normally. I wanted to solve the crime and not be a fuckup, but it seems its more entertaining when you go as a crazy cop hobo. In any case putting points in encyclopedia was a mistake. There's too much information to process organically about shit that doesn't matter. This is the only game where I've gotten bored at having a lengthy racist diatribe discussion with a black dude. I love the whole body personality thing but it really felt like it deserved a more exciting setting. It's all very muted and anti climatic.

Also I fucking hated the artificial timer. Seriously? I cant just soak up the atmosphere and dialogue? I gotta bust my ass to see and do everything on one playthrough? I just hate artificial time limits in dialogue based rpg games.

Really interested in all these employees that broke away though. Hope they are all successful, the format had a lot of potential in spite of how lackluster the story was in parts. I'm particularly interested in the future ski resort murder mystery story.

That's the issue in most RPGs. You want to see the intended plot before doing the more morally questionable choices with the chaos they can cause. At least for me the game was too long and railroaded to justify a second playthrough.

Speaking of which, why is there noticeable immigration to a crumbling eastern European country?
