Discord is atrocious (rant & a heads up) - We all know it sucks, but...

Anyone who hides downloads behind discord servers should be fucking shot. I caved in only once because I desperately needed a raw version of a corrupted terrain texture that was causing the whole ass game to CTD. Tried joining, instead got greeted with a questionnaire.

While I have used Discord for a while without any issues my biggest gripe are when popular games use Discord to try and make a community. Look at Helldivers 2, Risk of Rain, etc etc.

It's just full of annoying fucking tranny jannies. God forbid you just want to get updates for a game you enjoy, no you have to be part of the 'community'

The first clue for OP to have realized that Discord is atrocious is that IT'S DISCORD! Of COURSE it's atrocious... Bird's gotta fly, fish gotta swim, Discord gotta be atrocious...

(That being said, thanks go out to the OP for describing the journey through Discord-hell that was undertaken...)

Discord barely even functions on a basic level. It often crashes silently while in voice calls, forcing you to re-open the window to make it restart itself. Which has led to a lot of times where I just assumed everyone had been silent for the past several minutes when actually my discord crashed (It does this to me and everyone I know on a regular basis). Screensharing randomly crashes programs, sometimes it will just turn on noise suppression for no reason which makes everything incoherent. With graphics acceleration on Discord artifacts constantly (a problem once again shared between everyone else I know who uses it), you can't even make a new account with a fully legitimate gmail address without it demanding a phone number right off the bat. And it's a pedophile/grooming haven made by pedophiles and groomers. All of the shitty bloatware and features they dump into it with actually no purpose. Discord is a total disaster of a program and I break its TOS on a daily basis expecting to be banned from it, from then I'll just use Steam to talk to my friends.

Wouldn't pedophiles want anonymity or is it completely open and welcome on the platform now? I've literally never used Discord so forgive me if my question sounds naive.

you can still use 3, apparently 5 is crap and tries to hard to be discord (with the global account afaik). it's still beta tho, never tried it myself.

problem is that doesn't work for normies, and they gonna carry discord otherwise. you'd need at least an equal easy-to-use alternative, and even then it would be difficult to get them to switch "when all their friends and servers are on discord". it would be a slow process, unless they luck out and "new thing" becomes "the cool new thing" like myspace -> facebook.

revolt looks similar enough, but I admit I haven't looked at it closer either or it's background.

Another alternative that hasn't been mentioned in this thread yet would be Slack. It is targeted for business use more than gaming, but I have seen some gaming groups use it.

Using something that isn't Discord has the advantage of filtering out lazy people that don't want to use anything else, which I would consider a plus if I hosted a public facing community site.

I also remember Ventrilo having standalone server software so that would be another option for a self hosted server. Does anyone still use Ventrilo?

I joined one for the newly launched car channel Big Time only to see it's infested with car/gun enthusiasts that are also card carrying femboys and trannies with overtly sexual profile pictures etc. Every announcement has a tranny flag. Nobody likes it, because it's full of straight white men, but if the server is reported as hateful then there's no more server, so no "edginess" is allowed. The YouTube comments are safer. I no longer bother.

No matter what server I join with a central purpose, it is all like this. I only keep it these days to talk to old friends who are stuck on there for the same reason I am. Also the app is slow and the desktop version is equally as buggy. Bad software. Retvrn to IRC.

Discord is so bad even the browser version makes my computer chug. Seriously, how can you fuck up this bad it's a fucking web application

I hate this and when updates on projects are also Discord only. I'm not joining your discord to find what percentage your patch is at or when your game might come out or whatever the fuck it is you are working on. Just post an update on a blog or something. How hard is that? I don't wan to chat with unhinged fanbases. I just want to know what is going on.
