I think he just has a hard time with the difference between fiction and reality. It's not just the anti-gay stuff he insists on keeping canon. The Idea Guys stuff, which he hates, is also something he feels the need to keep in canon. He can't being himself to discard something because that would prove that his fantasy world is only fiction. So he rationalizes it away by saying he can't because [fantasy coping reasons].
He did it out of gender dysphoria issues.
