🐱 Discord’s lax policy on furry ‘cub content’ leads to user outcry

A clarification to Discord’s Terms of Service regarding the chat platform’s policies on underage pornography has ignited community concerns, with some users calling Discord’s approach to explicit content — especially involving anthropomorphized animals — hypocritical.

Discord allows sexual content when it is deemed consensual and shared appropriately, but draws a strict line when it comes to material involving minors. Last July, Discord cracked down on lolicon and shotacon — specific types of explicit cartoon material focused on young girls and boys, particularly underage fictional characters — but after an inquiry from a Discord user, one of Discord’s Trust and Safety specialist said in a statement that Discord does not “consider ‘cub’ content to be a violation of our Terms or Guidelines on its own.”

“Cub” content is what the furry fandom refers to as explicit material depicting underage, animal-like characters. As with lolicon and shotacon fan art, cub content represents a small, yet contentious area of the furry fandom.

Prior to this, a separate Discord user said they had asked another Trust and Safety specialist about whether cub content falls under the loli/shota ban. That time, the staff member maintained that cub content did violate the Terms of Service, according to the user. The user reached out to a third member of Discord’s Trust and Safety team, who reaffirmed that “this kind of [cub content] is allowable as long as it is tagged properly.”

After screenshots of this exchange were shared to r/Discord/, a Discord staff member going by karridan on Reddit stepped in, in an effort to temper growing resentment.

“When we made the decision to ban loli, there was a huge outcry on Reddit from users that argued that it wasn’t harming anyone, it was art, it would be the beginning of a slippery slope of banning NSFW content, and more,” wrote karridan. “We think there’s harm which exists with loli content and we don’t want Discord to be a place for that, specifically because it is the sexualization of children.”

“There is some overlap between ‘cub’ and loli. I want to make clear that if such content falls into the loli camp — which is to say, sexualization of human or humanoid minors — it’s still banned. If someone thinks that they can get away with a sexualized picture of a child simply by putting bunny ears or cat ears, they’re absolutely wrong,” they continued. “But, as far as I’ve seen on Discord, there is also some segment of “‘cub’ art that is not, in fact, human or humanlike at all [...] This content is significantly greyer, which is why there isn’t a blanket ban on all content that could conceivably fall under the umbrella.”

Users, however, have an issue with the idea that “there is some overlap between ‘cub’ and loli,” arguing that cub content is essentially furry loli content. The characters portrayed in cub art are specifically underage; many point to the depiction of characters in the My Little Pony fandom, which karridan stated was misattributed as “cub” content.

For the most part, regardless of how Discord users personally feel about the overall loli ban, there is an outcry that banning one type underage erotica and not another is hypocrisy. Some argue that there is a direct conflict of interest: The first Discord staff member to state that cub content is allowed is allegedly part of the furry fandom, with a profile on an erotic furry roleplaying site that lists “younger characters” as a kink.

We’ve reached out to Discord for comment regarding its policy on cub content and the resultant blowback, and we’ll update accordingly.

No it's just that one of the mods appear to be one.
If you think this is restricted to just one moderator at Discord, I don't have enough :optimistic: ratings to give you.

Multiple representatives of the company have come forward to reaffirm the apparently official policy that "cub" content isn't bannable. This ain't just a rogue mod accidentally getting into power and protecting his own interests. It's an infection that's gotten into the whole "Trust and Safety" organ of the company.

Side note: "Trust and Safety" groups are bullshit and any time a company has one it's a guarantee that their platform offers neither.

Having sex with children is illegal. Having sex with animals is illegal (in most places). Yet porn of underaged animals is ok :stress:

It's drawn, not real. It's disturbing but shouldn't be illegal. If it were actual... child furries being abused, it would be different...

You know what? I don't want to think about this anymore.

that argument could have had its day.

If discord didnt already ban Human loli/shota.

tbh this is worse than just never banning this content in the first place.

Pretty sure you can still talk about loli/shota on Discord anyways as long as you aren't exceptional and name your discord LOLI LOVERS INCORPORATED or whatever. These policies are rarely truly enforced anywhere, just to say they are is good press.
Yeah Discord is very lax about a lot of things as long as no one reports it or it does anything explicitly harmful.

I just wish Discord was consistent instead of trying to piss on their own grave. Honestly, if any furries really want cub they should just keep it on Inkbunny since apparently that's all that site is used for.

They've been trying to enter the game market with their own game store that has some timed exclusives. But so far all the exclusives have been either bad or mediocre.

Discords terms and service aren't explanatory enough. I had a situation where a sever I lurked on had a NSFW room, but teens got into it and the admins were pretty much complacent. Someone complained and the mods just just went apeshit with the excuse "people can choose to see this material if they believe they are mature enough"

I tried to find the article on Discord about NSFW rooms only to be for 18+ Only, to justify to the admin but the only thing it said was "it stands for Not Safe For WUMPUS, owo hurt fweelings prossible."

So Discord could be complacent too about letting kiddies in well. It's every adult's duty to make sure young kids don't see this shit or enable them.

Discord please be more specific with rules you fellow kids meme fuckers.

FurAffinity went through this shit several years ago, with "cub porn" being considered acceptable as long as the characters were animals, not humans. It only stopped when people went after FA's payment processor.

Back then, the furries who were into that shit would defend it by calling people pedophiles if they spoke up about what were inarguably drawings of small children being raped. "If you don't like our cub art it must be because you're a pedo" and so on.

The name of Discord is absurdly apt.

I don't know what is up with the platform/service, but it seems to be a veritable supermassive black hole of autism, insanity, and drama for whatever reason.

Is it the interface?

Features like custom emotes and competent image/gif display paired with ease of sharing invites has made it really easy for autists to conglomerate. The late-to-the-party meme awareness the company seems to have probably doesn't help.
It's the Reddit version of IRC.

Similarly, while users uploading CP is a 4chan problem, moderators being hypocritical furfags is a Reddit problem.

So underage furry porn is allowed? Let me check my clock.

Seriously though. This guy is just yet another example of why furries are bad news.
