If 2D comes back, it will probably be due to people yearning for the colorful art of anime and the warmth of old Disney cartoons. Stuff like that feels inviting to get lost in, especially as a lot of it was based in how to draw people into the story and have them feel wonder.

Realistically, I think there has to be a draw back towards traditional animation again. But it can't just be 'Traditional is better then CGI' it has to be 'What can we do to make traditional look magic again?' and 'What should inspire people about it to want to use it as a medium?'

Traditional is not as big here anymore unlike, say, places in Japan, because we've mostly quit showing anything anymore with it. We mostly now rely on trends on what kids 'want' so we can sell toys and use that as an excuse to not try anymore to be creative. This naturally limits what people can do as far as risk taking and creativity, and it's also always seemingly CGI now, because CGI often is the only offered or proposed profitable option in a lot of cases.

However, it's not a forgone conclusion that 2D is down for good. Often older stuff gets revived because it's ostensibly better replacement is ultimately found wanting after the novelty has worn off, or wasn't as superior as was once thought. Amazon uses cassette tapes to hold massive amounts of data, the Air Force is on their umpteenth F-15 after trying with the F-22, and some of of the best selling videogames are sprite-based or have that old retro style. 2D could have this same kind of renaissance, but it's going to take a while. People are still infatuated with the newness and possibilities of 3D, it's faults are mostly going to be overlooked or not acknowledged right now because we're still in the 'honeymoon' phase.
Not a dig but ever since the turn of the millennium it seems like 75% of anime coming out of Japan is the same slice of Life schoolgirl otaku drama shit. I know it's a cultural thing kind of like how we are with shitting out the same animated (or Live Action) sitcom with the same bubbling dad stereotype, but to a lot of people especially those who are unaware of Japanese customs going to get turned off especially if the anime presents itself as cute or kawaii.

I know a lot of this stuff I said it already happened pre-2000s but there seems to be more of a demand for it than ever.

So what CGI needs is an action film for adults that's NOT superheroes. Something like a Jason Bourne or [insert newer franchise here]. But done in CGI so you can film those car chases and gunfights in impossible ways.

Of course the mere existence of this would completely upend Hollywood and their system of having 2000 people to work on a film set. But it feels like this is what it's all leading up to.

Wouldn't the John wick series be an example of using CGI for an action film?

I wouldn't say its 75%, but it is pretty common. That's one of the reason I've soured on anime since the late 2000s. Lack of variety. Same reason I don't care much for most Hollywood films these days. I mean really, when was the last good Western (that is the genre) anime you've seen? How about space adventures (think Outlaw Star for example)? I know there's been some kind of fantasy adventure anime here and there, but personally I didn't find them impressive. Same with mecha animes that have come out recently. And don't get me started on horror/gory anime. Granted that's a genre I don't particularly miss.

I mean a John Wick made entirely in the computer! Aren't you listening? IT'S CGI! Like a CGI Spider-Verse but instead of Spider-Man it's your favorite hero, John Wick!

They did that Matrix thing in UE5. They did several films like the Jungle Book with only a real person and the rest is faked up. They could make a blockbuster action film in nothing but computers now. And I think they should.

I never knew Toy Story 3 was this dark

No that's a children's property and directed by known pedophile Steven Spielberg. I'm talking about Bourne Identity but made with computers and featuring no real actors.

I know, it's hard to picture. But if you really think about it, haven't we been heading in that direction ever since "bullet time"?

lol

No children enjoy or know of Tin Tin.

Are you thinking of something like Archer with photo-real animation?

Fuck, imagine if they did a photo-real motion-captured film/series set in Ancient Rome.

Now you're getting it! Building quality sets for Ancient Rome is far too expensive for anybody to do for the return. Building a CGI set and populating it with CGI actors... suddenly Rome comes to life! A city of hundreds of thousands. A bustling, living city! The glory of the Roman Empire at its peak! Only a fully CGI film could pull it off.

And the best part is they can reuse the assets forever. Want to make a sequel? Want to lease your Rome to other companies so they can use it? There are so many possibilities.

The thing is we need to transition to CGI actors to make it all work. You can't have thousands of extras unless they're CGI. But there will always be a disconnect between CGI people and real people unless you stop using real people. And while some might boohoo over the fate of the poor actors, they're all pedos or freaks anyway. If they have any real talent they can provide the voices for the CGI characters.

You mean like that Beowulf movie that was so creepily uncanny valley?

All of this is already the case, shit, if you cut out the inserted blue screen closeups of actor's, a substantial chunk of your average action movie or Marvel cape-shit would be best classified as 'animated films', since nothing on screen, including the digital doubles exist anywhere other than a hard drive.

I enjoyed it enough when I caught it at a legit whoopity shit IMAX 3d joint with the weird giant screen, not normal crap local theater "IMAX"
I recall at least not changing the channel with the RiffTrax of it came up
maybe it's just one of those brooms from Sorcerer's Apprentice?

The upcoming Percy Jackson series on Disney+ has cast their Annabeth and Grover and sure enough, Annabeth has been race swapped.

I've never read Percy Jackson so I don't really care, but I find it funny the author complained for so long about the movie adaptation not matching his book. There were even people upset when the movie came out that Annabeth wasn't a blonde like the book. But, since diversity and race-swapping are all the rage in Hollywood, I imagine the author and all those who complained will go through the same cycle of dealing with the "toxic" fans eventually saying "Annabeth wasn't supposed to be white". Hilarious!
