Do Nerds Naturally Gravitate Towards Leftism? If so, why?

This is an interesting question and merits a serious answer.
Let's define the standard idea of a "nerd". We could use a status based definition-unattractive(or at least not physically appealing or dominant), bookish, poor social skills, no or little experience with the opposite sex.
If we apply a Nietzchean framework-then the answer is obvious, weakness and resentment.
But let's look deeper, shall we?
Nerds as a rule tend to be somewhat alienated or incredulous towards the dominant norms of their group. "Wow our team lost the state championship, we're all upset" Nerd: "Uh who cares, none of you are playing professional?"
I realize that's not a systematic answer-but let me clarify a bit, nerds tend to be dismissive or indifferent to majority accepted rituals, concerns and prejudices. Imagine being the one kid at your school who genuinely doesn't care about pro sports? Or is at least indifferent? Or your interests and aptitudes lean more towards sci fi or whatever?
You're going to find yourself alienated from the mainstream. You may or may not have your own social group that shares your dispositions and interests but in general, nerds to be indifferent to what the "normal" boys and girls care about. Both in interests and social norms/expectations. More critical, skeptical, more imaginative of differing possibilities. Someone whose reading sci fi books or fantasy or what have you-is likely quite imaginative, and that translates to asking "why are things this way?" or "why should they stay this way?"
The basic arguments you're going to get amount too "well it always has been" "don't ask questions if you don't wish to be ostracized", "or "well it just is, grow up"-whether that be getting a job, how sexual relationships work, etc...
I think in general this leans towards leftism. Or at least, apolitical nerds being easily captured by leftism. If you grew up playing D&D and were into SW-I can promise, you are not likely to one:

Accept received wisdom from daddy as gospel
Benefit from these norms

I think its partly because conservatives tend to be more accepting of and benefit from the established order of things. Or at least they feel they do.
This doesn't mean nerds can't be niggercattle-many if not most are, but they don't have the same passive and relatively dull disposition towards life the average conservative does.
A nerd will soyjak over the latest Marvel film, and will be bullied into saying a nigger being cast in game of thrones is good-even if it goes against "the lore", whereas the fat beer bellied Fox News consumer is congenitally incapable of not watching niggerball and will get violently angry if you bring up how passive and weak this is.

I was actually just having this discussion with a friend last night. We were talking about the old Internet. I was reminiscing about old Internet forums even before 4chan. The forums were dedicated to very specific topics. I was active on Half-Life and Unreal Tournament forums in the late 90s and early 00s. I don't remember things ever getting political. It required a little bit of knowledge to get on the forum and a lot of knowledge on the board to not get called out as a tourist. This attitude kept normies and the wrong type of retards away. Try going on a gaming subreddit now and not run into some dipshit raving about Trump. There's a few subreddits that are the exception to the rule but those games are so autistic they scare the normies and your average console peasants away.
I blame Big Bang Theory. People who aren't smart need a way to feel smart. Rather than become knowledgeable to an autistic degree like an actual nerd, they imitate what they think a smart person is into. Given typical "leftist" college majors this tracks. There aren't very many leftist engineers because that requires a high degree of thinking. Sociology or African American studies in the other hand, all you got to do is regurgitate information with no greater thought or reasoning.
Nerds feel weak, powerless in many situations. They're also very lonely. The right basically kicks them in the nuts and tells them to git gud, but the left is very supportive. Unless you talk shit against their protected groups or the popular thing of the period you'll have them tell you how it's going to be fine, how you're so good and special, how the people were wrong for wronging you, etc. Sure, that's not healthy, but in the past two decades there's been very few people on the right that can actually be a good model for a young nerd and that can make him feel accepted.
If you have nerd friends it can be easy to get into the right wing too, but nerds don't have that many friends, and nowadays if you're a nerd anything you do has a lot of leftism in it.
The left has infected mostly all nerd hobbies, so it's incredibly hard to not cater to these people when participating in anything. Just like how smiling and saying positive things out loud can actually influence you to be happier and more positive, catering to these delusions gets you more lenient to them, you slowly start accepting some of their ideas.
I do feel like a lot of what's going on is blown out of proportion by an incredibly tiny but insanely vocal and powerful minority. KF's hosting issues were almost entirely because of fin-fang-foom jones or whatever his name is. Sure, others caused trouble, but it was one specific incredibly autistic individual that did the worst. He literally caused long-lasting side-effects with Cloudflare& etc, opened the floodgates for a more censored internet.
I bet that in most of these "ruined hobbies"(many are still ok but I can understand why they are completely destroyed for some people), the "ruination" came from just a couple of annoying retards whose opinions got propagated by other retards that have nothing to do with the hobby. Forums stopped this in the past because you wouldn't be able to see and interact with all this shit if you had nothing to do with that hobby, but with Social Media it's much worse.
In most of the small discords I'm in there's really no political sperging at all, you can say nigger and joke about anything, but the bigger something gets you eventually have one of these lunatics and the rules change for everyone. well most of nerds today i encountered are leftist and it's not because they are leftist in the first place but, because of societal pressure and influences coming from family and friends. Nerds are local social outcasts. When/if they get away from the high school social bubble and go to a college/new local environment and are rewarded more for doing things right, instead of doing things “socially acceptable” to the local populace, they will go from left wing (anti-authoritarian) to more centered.
As a simple example, you answer a math question in high school, you are docked points because you didn’t use the teachers preferred method due to how long it takes, you instead used the “shortcut”. No real explanation, you’re “just a kid”. Go to college, do the exact same thing, no points docked. Person teaching the course goes “Yeah, you were on a timer. So you think better this way? Ok, here are the pitfalls and here’s where you have no choice but to things the long way.”
The “math question” is pretty much any social situation. This is why “nerds“ fare better when they leave their communities and go somewhere else. As a newcomer, you’re judged more by your actions than your hobbies. After all, no one knows or really cares what you do at home, they just know what you do outside.
At college, everyone is a newcomer at their first year, so it’s a thousand-person Mexican standoff where even if you faceplant, you can still get a pass by just not being near those people anymore.
The leftism gravitation is pretty much a cause of anti-authoritarianism because the local community is the authority in the early years. Said leftism sticks when the new authorities that give you a fair shake are also leftists. This is why “academic infiltration“ is important to both sides. They both need to be the “fair chance”, because the fair chance is the one that imprints the best.

Earlier nerds were mostly contrarian outcast types, think Amazing Atheist, the guy who shoved a banana up his ass to disprove god, or edgelords that turn a 180 as they age. But at some point it became a mandate to be overwhelmingly leftist if you want to have a position in many of those communities, mostly through the gatekeeping of people far more insane than TAA ever was. Ones who were mistakenly given a position of power and have the time and energy necessary to enforce it. Without any room for opposing thought to grow, it then gets beaten into the heads of the impressionable younger folk, who in turn accept it fully and they become gay zealots.

A lot of lefty “nerds” are people who want to be seen as smart because being nerdy is associated with having a high paying tech or corporate job. They’re left wing because it’s what’s in vogue with the in crowd in Twitter and Google. They don’t want to be popular with the working class chuds they want to be liked by the blue haired feminists who majored in lesbian studies.
Despite their claims to being anti-main stream they crave being liked by the right kinds of people. They need social approval, they crave being told they’re right or good, and they’ll do anything to feed their dopamine addiction ie up boats regarding social justice. They rarely have any unique ideas or provide anything of substance. See movie Bob.
Some of them are idealistic autists who are lazy and want government to bail them out of their poor life decisions. This type often tends to be edgelords and the most pathetic of the lot. They are the most likely to be homeless, addicts, and a general parasite on society. They’re the biggest degenerates and often latch onto mainstream “nerdy” animes and other IPs. ADF is the poster boy for this kind of leftie autist. If they got a degree it eats at them that they took out thousands in loans for a piece of paper that was functionally useless.
Others are just contrarians who blame the culture they were born into for their own failings. They believe falsely that their lives would be better if they weren’t stuck in their small town. Often they’re mentally unwell and would be fucked regardless of where they were born. See every lefty nerd hick who has a romanticized view of Hollywood and New York. A good example of this is the nostalgic chick.

My former best friend was like this. I had known this guy for 25 years. The dude thinks of himself as a member of the intelligentsia. I have no other way to describe it. Later on he began treating me like some uneducated backwoods redneck even though we grew up like 5 houses down the street from each other. Our parents were all solidly blue collar. His mom was a bookkeeper a diesel mechanic shop for fuck's sake and his dad was a forester.
I don't want to toot my own horn but I work as a software engineer and do well enough. I have three degrees (not that they matter). This guy took 7 years to finish his undergrad in political science. Due to tons of fucking around and just general dumbass things young men do. He ended up teaching English in Vietnam and is now a Middle School teacher or something. Nothing wrong with that.
But gradually he had just more and more animosity towards me. He blocked me and cut all ties like 4 or 5 years ago when I didn't join him in hatred of "evil things done at the border to immigrants" here in Texas. Because it was totally something I could have changed or done anything about.
I don't know how or why but the guy gradually became this radical pro-government extremist. Where if you didn't support [every leftist thing] you were a nitwit and uneducated.
All of the social circle he hangs out with and that I formerly hung out with are like this. Career baristas, small town art school teachers, etc, etc. Not sure if I would label them nerds per se I guess. They were way more hipster and thus more popular than I ever was.
Spending hours learning CSS in the early 00s didn't attract all that much women. But my interest in technology very much paid off in the end.

To a prior comment about why software is so left vs other engineering. The problem is multifold....
10+ years of everyone should learn to code (which is disastrous really) means you have a ton of young desperately unemployed or older career switchers trying to get out from dead end jobs into "easy" money. It was true at one point you could self teach and grift a lot, but those days at the entry level are long gone. So now you have a lot of software "enthusiasts" at the door who barely know a damn and also need government gibs or lean hard left from prior life associations.
Inside the industry you have more problems. Ageism was always a thing because 20 somethings are more easily lured to work 90 hour weeks on salary for startups or getting ahead (promises of advancement or riches that again are largely false) and booting the "expensive" experienced engineers who tend to be older, lean more right, and have reasons to say no to absurd demands (which makes them unpopular with the leadership who like yes men who don't point out flaws in plans).
Younger skews more left.
Silicon valley (lol at the state of San Fran) also skews left and in a highly networked field it means more lefties.
And in a highly networked field once things got to the point corporations were shoving the leftist fist up your ass, the smart engineers who might be anything but far left realized that 1. Their companies would fire them and use connections to black list them. 2. Their peers who may be terminally online would nuke them from every hobby and joy they ever had socialization with. Also likely ensuring the job blacklisting from anywhere.
I've found prior convos of people considering doing to do this to me (ousting from hobby groups etc) and thinking im alt right (im not) because I own guns and am nerdy and particularly have a stick up my ass about authoritarianism from any side. That mostly failed because they couldn't actually convince even the soytards that what scant things I had said added up to much. But this proves a point- unless you want to lose everything socially and career wise in software you shut up.
You let people assume you vote for their team and do what they want and you simply don't comply. But you can't be vocal about it. You keep your head down at work and make sure that you look like the professional employee who agrees with the DEI shit shoved down your throat and just somehow never has time to engage in any of the work groups, emails or clubs. Ah such a shame too many kittens is always so busy, she never attends the bipoc education book club to either elevate or grovel herself depending on her skin color. I am not a woman lol. It just sparked my interest in tech at a young age, and it wasn't a cool thing to pursue. So I was saying I wasn't very popular or anything.
I strictly work in backend engineering now. If your job is around programming the nuts and bolts keeping critical operations moving you are unfireable and they will do anything to keep you. I strictly work in backend engineering now. If your job is around programming the nuts and bolts keeping critical operations moving you are unfireable and they will do anything to keep you. Pretty much everything said above is true. I'll add some more:
- Nerds are more likely to live inside their own heads. Leftist claims about what people are like are entirely at odds with reality, but they sound smart, and the less experience you have dealing with reality, the more plausible they sound. For example, the idea that the mental/behavioral differences between men and woman are purely due to socialization sounds really plausible if you spend more time reading noodly nerd-scribblings about men and women than you do spending time with your spouse and kids.
- Nerds have nothing whatsoever to do with spics or niggers. Spics are people who make them tacos, and niggers are the cool badass sergeants and cute mulatto hacker girls in video games. See for example Bryan Caplan's book defending open borders - this nebbish Jew economist who hasn't set foot outside the Acela corridor in decades sees Hispanics solely in terms of food trucks and believes "magic culture" will turn them into educated, well-behaved, rootless cosmopolitans like him.
- The only way you can believe in leftism in a non-grug-brained way is to digest copious amounts of text, something nerds are good at, and which gives them a smug sense over superiority over anyone who can't (i.e. won't) navigate the complex rationalizations for why cutting out your dick meat and turning the empty skin inside-out up your taint turns you into a woman.
