We spent a good portion of first grade learning about Johnny Appleseed I think, and I just figured out that he wasn't a made up legend like Paul Bunyon. But now I'm wondering if this is a dumbass Indiana thing or what.
I've heard of Johnny Appleseed but never really learned anything about him in school. He played his most significant role in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Ontario so that may be why. As someone who lives outside those areas I guess he is like of those regional folk heroes some kids are taught about more then others depending on location.
I only heard about Johnny Appleseed outside of school.
Our regional folk legend is a guy nicknamed "The Mad Trapper". He was a hermit, and lived in a shanty cabin deep in The Rockies. One day, a Fed encroached on his property so he shot the Mountie. The Feds were very angry about this, and declared a manhunt. In response, The Mad Trapper jerry-rigged various traps and defenses on his property. Then he killed more feds until the RCMP raided his fortress and shot him to death.
I wonder what he would've thought about the antichrist.
Yeah he was huge in my early education in Massachusetts since he was born in Leominster, Mass. We had a Johnny Appleseed day every year. It was also believed that he would plant the apples because most alcohol was apple mash based, and if you could grow apples the land could be settled. Booze hound
