i was just watching oneyplays saints row, it was my first time getting introduced to the characters/"story", all the lines of dialogue are "captialism amiright?", "i hope i get benefits for being a private contracted military company", and all those wonderful leftism jargon

but after watching it, my takeaway thought is "damn, are people really proud of this?".

i know gaming has been in a downward spiral for almost a decade now but i can't sit there in said gaming company, listen to all the voice lines and go "wow, this is a work of art"

Saints Row 2022 is a shallow piece of shit wearing the skin of a franchise that's been dead since 2014.
The most fun I had in that game was the character creation (which I will admit is pretty in-depth and well done, contrary to the rest of the fucking game).

I used to think video games weren't like this and there were better times, but I've been playing Paper Mario TTYD to see what the hype's about because of the remaster, and in the game there's this part where you have to eavesdrop on the conversations of bird NPCs to progress. A supporting character that you meet suggests you do it, adding that birds are "well informed". Their dialogue is some of the most heavy-handed commentary I've seen in my life.

IIRC, Metal Gear Rising was also like that, emphasizing a "capitalism bad" narrative. I'm sure if you replayed some of those games from your teens, you would find more examples. Honestly I wouldn't recommend doing that, I'd rather keep my memory of them being fun games while I was a kid and completely ignorant to the culture war.

There was a time around the Wii and DS where the US and UK versions of Nintendo games would have different translations, with Treehouse filling the game with dated memes, while Nintendo Europe would do a faithful translation. That doesn't happen much these days as they just release the Treehouse version in the west, but if it's true in Paper Mario TTYD, that might one of, if not the first example of it.

Related, Super Paper Mario on the Wii had a whole stage making fun of a comicbook guy esc nostalgic Nintendo fan.

It is the US version, and according to this, the US and Euro translations are exactly the same except for one error. I can't say for absolute certain because I'd have to download and play like 15 hours of the European version to get to that part.

Though, in my brief research, I found something might help your case as far as potential localization meddling goes. Apparently the character "Vivian" is a man that pretends to be a woman, which was censored in English localization. Additionally, It turns out Nintendo is fucking BASED

The only way to know for certain about that bird dialogue is to get a direct translation of it, but considering how drastic of a change that would be, I'm just gonna call it "plausible" and leave it at that. Mainly because I can't read Japanese and I'm not invested enough to dig around for such a transcript.
