It made sense back then. That was the time where Blackwater was in the news, videos of them fighting were going viral, and there was hand wringing about them overthrowing the US government.
But as with many millennial writers, they still think it's the late 90s/early 2000s. That gay people don't have equal rights and "right wing" means bible thumping religious nuts screaming that Grand Theft Auto is going to turn kids into killers.
Some media seems outdated simply because style, technology, and story telling change. These games and films are dated as soon as they release.
