I ask this question to many of my friends, but I get a varied amount of answers.

Here are the most common:

Of course it is! Have you seen "insert artist here".
No its not. I hate makeup!!!! I prefer my girls/boys natural.
No its not. I feel like it is just used to make one feel more beautiful.
I'm not sure. Deep question.

I consider people who do practical makeup effects artists.

makeup is art, but art is very broadly defined.

These are also examples of art:

so you see, anything that requires the slightest amount of creative human endeavor can be art

What about people that just do makeup for fun, just to look beautiful. Do you consider that art?

No, that's like saying every person who colors in maps given to them in primary school artists or someone who colors in a coloring book. Do they attempt to use make up in interesting, expressive new ways? Do they constantly hone their craft to perfect it and be progressive? Do they pursue it as a career? Then sure, I'd be happy to consider them an artist. Just slathering your face in foundation and putting on some eyeliner to look pretty is not.

I mean, it takes some talent and creativity when applying makeup, even casually.

Not really. Most people follow the same simple steps when applying make up. It takes a child practice to learn to color in the lines too.

Yes, but they are still taking some risks, like trying a bold lip, applying purple eyeshadow, etc.

Trying a different colored crayon than they normally do. That's not being an artist.

Are you trying to convince yourself you're an artist for putting on make up or something? I'm genuinely curious why you're keen on the topic.
