Because passion. The original literally hollowed out a plateau for the chariot race. And had THOUSANDS of extras. No CGI bullshit, this was the 50s. They wanted to tell the story of Christ. The second was a cash grab.

Ah. When you dig through old VHS tapes at thrift stores, you find a lot of old gems from that era. That's how I watched Ben Hur in the first place.
