Nigger I'm begging you to add the titles so we don't have to open each one to see what they areI don't know much about the genre but it captures the 2000s aesthetic (or a part of it) perfectly. Take these songs for example (although they're from related genres):
Same, fortunately 20 something year old emo girls still exist they just arent as common as they used to beBack in the 00's I thought that whole scene -- including the music -- was really gay as I was going through a "METAL or DIE" phase. I admit I do have some fond memories thrifting through Hot Topic for band tees though, back when malls were still a thing you did with friends.
Nowadays...I still think the people that associate(d) with that scene are pretty gay. The older crowd (like core millennials) who you can tell were former emos that I see show up at shows are just as insufferable as they always were, except now they're also fat and ugly (the girls were pretty cute I admit) without having lost their touch of cliquism. The younger crowd I can't really comment on -- to me, TikTok and other social media has atomized the meaning of subcultures in general for that age range.
My view on the music itself has softened up a bit though in recent years, I find there's a few tracks that at least have a good melody that I can kick with.
I feel like Brand New doesn't belong in this list. PATD, FOB, MCR, Paramore, AFI, 30 Seconds To Mars, etc was all theater kid shit, flamboyant and performative and usually centered on high energy melodic singing. Brand New usually just felt like a Catholic kid reading his diary.Panic! At The Disco, Fall Out Boy, Taking Back Sunday, Brand New, and All Time Low
The Human Abstract
Saosin still goes hard, though Senses Fail reminds me to add Zebrahead, New Found Glory, Sum 41, and Good Charlotte. This is still the same shit I listen to when I’m drunk and don’t have to worry about curating music for anyone else. Honorable mentions that I haven’t seen anyone else bring up: Saosin, Senses Fail, Thursday and Scary Kids Scaring Kids(Imagine pushing forty and being in a band called “scary kids”.)
Any time someone mentions the good old days of emo music I think of this song lol. So daggy but I won't pretend I wasn't blasting this song 40 minutes agoSO CUT MY WRISTS AND BLACK MYY EYYYYYYYES, SO I CAN FALL ASLEEP TONIGHT
