Do you realistically think we'll ever have a mars colony?

Given all the hurdles to even set up an initial colony let alone the cost do you think any nation will actually be able to build a Martian colony?
It'd probably be the Chinese if anyone.

i'm skeptical of letting the public or private entry that funds it control it, Total Recall comes to mind.
I think space as it stands is a marketing ploy for NASA to suck up dollars exploiting the imaginations of the masses. I don't want to shame people for being optimistic for our future but our priorities as a species hasn't changed, and we've already seen how quickly an institutional knowledge base can fall apart when there's no incentive to keep it
There's also the people who simp for an unknown alien race when they"re like "they'd be so mad at what we did to our planet" but really anything that we'd come into contact with is looking to conquer and control

I think so, unless the green movement kills us first.

They're not interested in solutions to solve whatever climate problems happen on Earth, they only want to see the extermination of mankind because they believe that's the only thing that'll heal mother Earth.

Think Char's Counterattack

My view on it is that it's the only problem that is on a large scale. It's a movement that opposes everything beneficial to humanity, whether it's fossil fuels or nuclear power.

We'd probably mess it up and pollute it just as badly as we do on Earth.

Sounds like Avatar.

Yeah, why not? The big problem with Mars is getting people there, getting people to survive, and establishing a self-sustaining colony because AAA's range doesn't extend that far lol.

Once all the scientists get their fill of analyzing the desolate, Death Valley-like planet, they'll turn their gaze to other terrestrial planets. It's all just a long process of expanding our gaze into the Solar System and the stars. I do not believe there is real long-term desire to remain on Mars unless the scientists discover Mars has some kind of economic value for Earth.

Right now the plan seems to be:
- get autonomous robots on Mars to look around for us
- examine that data
- send goods to Mars for robots to build human domiciles
- humans visit Mars for realsies and do in-person studies

The real advancements for humanity come from the robots doing the work while humans move towards a new post-scarcity, AR/VR-enhanced daily life where our needs are fulfilled by robots. Robots mine asteroids, robots grow and cook food, robots adjust our easy chairs.

I don't think I'd ever want robots preparing 100% of my food.

And what, you prefer a human with opposing politics to you and out-of-control hormones to make the right decisions in providing you the perfect steak?

No, sir. In the future you'll want a wagyu steak cooked to your liking served alongside fugu as you travel the latter side of Jupiter to get better reception of the latest OTS (over the stars) update for your Sega Dreamcast 2's newest title: Grand Theft Auto VI.
