Documentary Recs

Jodorowsky's Dune
HBO's Autopsy
The Magic of Filmation

I'll think of more later...

Grizzly Man.

Not only is it very well-made as a film, but the source material (a socially-awkward man who spent years studying grizzly bears and was ultimately killed by one) might interest lolcow-watchers.

I'm going to expose my power level here but I saw this with my girlfriend at the time, and as soon as they got to that point above -- that this weird guy who treated bears like toys was eaten by one -- I burst out laughing. Loud. Then I noticed she was looking at me like this.

I watch a lot of movies and documentaries. Some I've really enjoyed:

American Movie - An EXTREMELY independent filmmaker in Milwaukee, Mark Borchardt, struggles to make his master opus. I wind up watching this at least once a year. I find it really inspiring despite the fact that it probably wasn't intended that way. (Incidentally, Coven is on YouTube. It's not bad.)

Crumb - The life (and family) of R. Crumb. How perfectly goddamned delightful it is, to be sure.

Joy Division - I didn't really care for Joy Division for some years, because I was introduced to them by obnoxious goth fucks that worshipped Ian like obnoxious hippie fucks worship Jerry. Only later did I re-discover them and the different sides of the band. A cautionary note is that the guy that made this doc really takes "critics" seriously -- almost none of them have anything interesting to say unless you're looking for the most pretentious comments about music ever made on film (one refers to the album Unknown Pleasures as a record describing "a very ipodded world". Shut the fuck up.)

The interviews with the surviving band members, as well as Tony Wilson and random scenesters more than makes up for it, though.

Stoked - The rise and fall of the '80s vert craze in skateboarding through the person of one of its first identifiable stars, Mark "Gator" Ragowski, currently incarcerated for the brutal rape and murder of a girl who was unfortunately enough to look like his ex-girlfriend. It's pretty good as a film that picks up where Dogtown and Z Boys left off.

Inside Nature's Giants. It's not a single documentary, but a British tv series about dissecting large or gigantic animals. Completely fascinating if pretty gross.

I don't know how I could have forgotten the greatest fake-documentary-within-a-feature-film-about-porno ever made.

R rated, probably NSFW

Thinking about Bob's military record in another post, this documentary came to my head again of one Virginian who bothered taking that big step across the border and became an North Korean citizen to this very day (unless he's already dead). Produced for the BBC and narrated by Christian Slater.

Oh, I'm glad there's a documentary thread! I'm always on the look out for interesting ones.

Here. I've just finished watching "Judgment Day for Intelligent Design". A NOVA documentarru cobering Kitzmiller vs. Dover Area School District.

It's quite interesting. I remembered when this happened, but I stopped following it. The documentary does a good job in recreating he events and interviewing the participants. You can watch it here:

Another interesting one I recently watched was "Deep Water". It a documentary on Donald Crowhurst, one of the participants in a "round the world" boat race. I don't want to spoil much. I found an online version, here: http://putlocker.is/watch-deep-water-online-free-putlocker.html

This is a great documentary I watched a while ago, it's really interesting (especially if you're in to punk music).

Battlefield was a fascinating series mostly covering battles and campaigns of World War II.

When I was a kid, I didn't have cable, so I couldn't get my WWII fix from the Hitler History Channel.

A&E used to be that way too.

old BBC thing about Chernobyl
edit: oh wait that's a repackage I think. The one I liked was from before 1996. I dunno if that one's any good, but it's probably the same basic song.

I haven't finished watching this documentary but so dat it seems interesting and well made, I thought I'd post a link since it's been banned in a few places:

India's Daughter:

A look at the 2012 Dehli Rape Case. I figured some Kiwis (for example @Luna and others) would be interested in the subject matter given some of the views expressed by some of our more "controversial" users (for example @Holden and others) .

Capturing the Friedmans. This is by that Andrew Jarecki guy who made a documentary about millionaire murderer Robert Durst, who inadvertently confessed to the murders during filming.

Like that more recently notorious film, it's about a family whose members ended up convicted of crimes involving child molestation, but from a position of uncertainty as to whether they actually committed it. Whether or not they're guilty (and at least the father almost certainly was guilty of something), it's a disturbing look at a creepy family.
