Blu-Ray is expensive as fuck in my country, so i collect DVDs. There are some websites here that sell limited edition and collections of movies that themselves make and i like to collect them. (Kinda like the DVD equivallent of Limited Run games, but cooler, theres a lot more effort put into everything and it includes some nice gifts). But i also collect standalone and basic dvds.

Yes, still do. I never bothered to get a Blue-Ray player yet and have a huge DVD collection from the 2000s worth just building off of.

I distrust streaming and the resulting expense+lack of availability especially when it comes to older films. As I fear companies retroactively editing things to make them CURRENT YEAR or just ditching things that dont meet consoomer tastes. My favorite period for film is like 1970-1995 so it just makes sense to keep doing what I am doing (and piracy when appropriate).

A little bit. I have the first 8 seasons of the Simpsons on DVD, but I got those back when owning DVDs was still considered normal. Im also a bit proud of my DVD copy of District 9 that I got from a Hollywood Video that was shutting down. Occasionally if I see some cool DVDs at a second-hand store, I'll pick them up. Mostly to prepare for the end days when the Internet is dead.

But I'm more into collecting CDs, including bootlegs.

I used to pirate download, later pirate stream, but less of that now because everything sucks and things like human suffering (lolcows) can entertain me instead.

If I did pick up any interesting $1 discs, I would rip them to a hard drive and keep the disc in a box somewhere.

I have a USB external DVD drive and it's very easy to get more DVD drives, such as in Dell Optiplex PCs. Blu-ray is more difficult. I would consider picking up one of these LG internal drives before they disappear from the market forever, and doing the firmware downgrade to read UHD discs.

Too bad there is no savior in sight for optical media. Introduce another optical disc and the players would support the rest of the formats from the prior ~45 years. The discs themselves have variable longevity based on the quality of materials used and handling, but some might be good a century after production.

I used to buy them more often but now I just sail the seven seas.

One issue that prevents me from buying more is that I'm into some niche genres of cinema/TV shows. This not only makes it harder for me to find what I'm interested in even online, but when I actually do find it said DVDs cost a fortune – if I want to watch that Asian TV drama from 1988 then the choice between a DVD collection that costs 665 freedom bucks and a HDTV encode is not hard to make

Used to. Had a fairly sizable collection (several hundred I’d wager) but space started to become an issue, as well as I just started to get out of the collecting mentality so I sold them off bit by bit.

Like @SmallKiwi I just pirate my movies and tv shows, and have done that for about a decade now. Have a handful of 1TB hard drives filled with stuff.

I collect Blu Rays of stuff I like. Every year that list grows smaller. Last year it was Columbo and Babylon 5. Nothing recent. Nothing so far this year. I rip them and keep the discs as a backup copy.

I've got beat up DVDs from 1998 that still work just fine. Only had disc rot in two discs ever, and I'm sure that was because of manufacturing issues and not age.

Space is definitely a problem for me now, especially with discs being so cheap and easy to find, so I only buy stuff that grabs me. I have four cabinets of discs and more stacked around the living room. It's too much

I actually still do. I work a an antique store so a lot of dvds I’ve obtained from that and I’ve bought in general. I don’t like paying for streaming services and everytime I log in it just logs me out so I started collecting because if the copyright niggers wasn’t to horde all the movies behind 50 paywalls then I’m sure as fuck getting dvds so they can’t get their weekly tax.

One of the highlights of my collection is a DVD copy of the original Dawn of the dead that’s worth 50 bucks (I have a digital copy of the extended version so I usually just watch that one)

I also horde VHS’ and have been converting them to digital. I’d post some of the copy’s of films to share with people but I don’t want to fill up the kiwi servers like madre did. I think anything copyrighted on archive gets taken down.

If there is also a “royal bay” sharing area on the site let me know, I’ve been looking for a copy of Hong Kong express and a couple of other hard to find movies.

Still have most of my Simpsons DVDs after all these years. I'm missing seasons 6,7,10,11 and 19. I'm watching the DVDs now and seeing if they still work. I already had to garbage a season 8 disc 4 because it had disc rot and scratches. I didn't help that it was in one of these numbers:

no because i lack the space for discs to begin with (plus they get damaged way too easily). i just stick to downloading my stuff and then having it on my pc or my phone

I like finding out of print or hard to find stuff. I love Something Weird Video DVDs, they're jam packed with lots of wild bonus material. I keep an eye out at thrift stores, record stores and places like The Exchange. You can end up finding something nice for a cheap price.

I did have DVDs, but never collected them, rather rented a lot of. I went super into collecting blu rays, sold a good number off just make up some room, right now got a pretty good 4k collection, would have to check but pretty sure I'm above 200 movies if I had to guess.

Only thing I would really ever buy on DVD is old BBC shows, as most of their stuff was shot on video.

Issue with collecting any media format is the quality of it, got to be very careful you aren't buying a bad releases such as the upcoming James Cameron remasters, or Predator on blu ray (4k however is great for it)
