Does anyone else here collect DVDs?

I do collect a lot of VHSs and DVDs as this is one of my interests and also because of preserving what the original movies and TV shows were originally intact

I have a small set of DVDs for movies that haven't been rereleased on any other form of media, or in one or two cases movies which haven't had that specific cut released on blu-ray or streaming.

They're all digitized by me, but I keep the physical copies around as a back up.

I collect shit tons of anime blu rays as well as normal shit, some in 4k, some bluray, some DVD. Have a really nice DVD movie set of Patton, with a separate bonus feature disc, really like that one.

Yes and no. I’ve been holding off for a while because there’s a growing list of criterion blu-rays I’ve been wanting.

What I do have is a mixture of animated features and tv shows and a few old films and comedies.

i collect dvds, bds, and laserdisc. dont really do a whole lot collecting now of days. downsized my ld collection before moving to texas but still have a sizable amount.

Recently snagged a copy of Napoleon Dynamite. Yesterday sucked. Probably gonna watch it to wind down today in beautiful blu ray glory.

I collect physical media, mostly CDs and DVDs, though I have some Blu-ray, laserdisc and VHS. Last I checked I had well over 2000 films. To save space I remove the art and disk from its hard shell case and slide it into a plastic sleeve. I’m not particularly concerned with the packaging like most ‘collectors’, because I actually watch the films instead of having a wall of plastic trash that’s never used.

But why so much Colonel? I hear you ask.

Mostly due to me being a horror/sci-if nerd, and as such I didn’t get the opportunity to watch that much growing up. My country didn’t have as many issues with censorship as you’d expect, but not many studios saw North Africa as a lucrative market. I got a lot of bootlegs, tons of eurotrash, but that’s about it. When I moved for school I was utterly overwhelmed by he selection in western rental stores. I wanted to take these films back with me, so the logical thing to do was buy disks and put them in a binder. As I moved from place to place I also became acutely aware of the censorship problem. For example, most films were butchered when exported to the UK or other parts of the ME/NA. My wife hadn’t ever even seen an uncensored copy of the Evil Dead, or the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, as her country made owning them a potential crime. This pissed me off. I wanted to make sure I had a collection that was as uncensored as humanly possible, and it became somewhat of a hobby after awhile.

Now I have many oop films, uncensored bootlegs, you name it. As the culture wars shift I’m actually really glad that I decided to start collecting decades ago. There’s that same comfort that comes from owning a physical copy of something and saying ‘fuck you I have the right to watch what I want without your interference’ to the government and major studios.

I buy DVDs of stuff I cant easily pirate, which is usually very specific documentaries. Its easier to just go on ebay and track down a $5 copy of something like Prehistoric Park then it is to hunt down a torrent.

I rip em, add to my media server then throw into storage.

Yeah, my collection is somewhat legendary. Mostly goodwill finds but I was working at a blockbuster at the end and made off with the stuff that didn't sell. I'm going to catalog the collection, but its pretty damn massive. I've got everything from the 1979 Arnold Schwarzenegger western comedy "The Villain" to "Dark City" to "Tammy and the T-Rex."

There are great bootleg DVD sites online where you can get stuff that has never been released on DVD or blu-ray officially. I've gotten some amazing stuff from them... everything from silent films to rare TV specials, old short subjects, independent art films, concert videos, uncut versions of censored movies, etc. Some of these people curate series of discs that are incredible collections all organized and cataloged.

If anyone knows any sellers like this that they'd recommend, let me know.

Yup. If it means saving $10-20 over a Blu-ray I'll get it. If I manage to find a Blu-ray cheaper for some reason, then I'll buy it.

For short subjects and b-movies I’d recommend Something Weird Video, most of their catalogue is soft porn, but they have tons of vintage tv specials, old adverts, etc. Unfortunately they’ve severely cut back the numbers of DVD-Rs they produce. For old, public domain films on the cheap I’d recommend Alpha Video.

I remember years back a guy called ‘Stumpy Disks’ who had a crazy bootleg collection, but this was back in the early days of DVD when most people were still doing tape trading.

Nah. My last collection got stolen after sharing with the wrong people (my fault for having it in an easily steal-able wallet, as was the style at the time). Up until that point, I'd taken it to dozens of gatherings with friends/strangers who were always respectful of others' property. Sounds weird/autistic in hindsight to bring a DVD wallet to parties and such, but it was when streaming wasn't a thing and people's access to movies was limited. I guess I was just among the right kind of trash people when it got taken. It all but killed my compulsion to buy physical copies of my favorite movies/shows.

All I really miss are my Venture Bros DVDs. *sigh*

I’d recommend Something Weird Video, snip For old, public domain films on the cheap I’d recommend Alpha Video.
Those companies are different than what I'm talking about. They are legit companies dealing in PD and licensed stuff. By the way, Something Weird isn't doing their own discs any more. They're licensing to other companies now. No more mail order. Alpha has some miserable prints.

The people I'm talking about are serious collectors/curators who set up a disc burning rig and sell curated discs. One of the companies I buy from put out a DVD a month on a subscription basis. Lots of obscure Japanese films, gore and 80s horror that you can't find anywhere else. Another company compiles optimal versions of films like Hard Boiled that have had terrible blu-ray releases and films like Faster Pussycat that was barely released on blu-ray before going out of print. TV shows like the British Incredibly Strange Film Show, variety shows like Hollywood Palace, rock concert films from camera systems in the venues, disc after disc of Soundies and the French version of the same thing, films by Andy Warhol and other art titles, pre-code talkies, bizarre Czech and Hungarian horror films, etc. Nothing you've ever seen before and most of it stuff you haven't even heard of.

DVD is quite alive as a format in the underground trading scene.

What exactly are you looking for then? Obscure horror? Pre code films? TV recordings?

Unfortunately SWV has mostly farmed out their catalog to AGFA, which is good in the sense that we get better prints, but bad in the sense that I can’t get a physical copy of Highway Scare Films vol. 3.

And yes….? I didn’t suggest it wasn’t, only that it’s unfortunate that I’ve seen some really good underground trading sources disappear as of late. Hell, VHS trading is making a comeback due to zoomies getting in on nostalgia, unfortunately most of the tapes they bring to swaps are your run of the mill big studio releases.
